Hello all,
I'm just wondering how many lighthouses people have visited? I'm just starting...so my list isn't too large....
Horton's Point, LI NY Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia South Bass Island, ME Pemaquid Point, ME Marshall's Point, ME Boon Island, ME Cape Neddick, ME Cape Elizabeth, ME Portland Harbor, ME Whaleback, NH Portsmouth Harbor, NH Wood Island, ME Egg Harbor, ME Rockland Breakwater, ME Owl's Head, ME
I'm just wondering if there are any I should try to get to prior to my moving to Wisconsin? I only have a month left, so I'm trying to visit as many as I can.
Thanks again and look forward to reading your posts.
Jeff :p

Well...mine's long. I have it in a Word document....on my computer that crashed. I think I have a backup on a CD from before I went to Massachuetts, though. I've seen 153. I'll redo the list and post it here ASAP.

If I were leaving Maine I would take a trip north and visit West Quoddy in Lubec, Maine and then drive to New Brunswick, Canada to hike out to the island during low tide to see East Quoddy. That is a special trip that is well worth the time. We had the island to ourselves and the lighthouse station is great even though it is deserted (except the Coast Guard maintains the light). Also, back in Maine, I would suggest, if you have the time, take a local cruise which takes you past several Maine lights. These are great trips as well.
When you get to Door County, WI, besides the lighthouses, try the fish boils! They are wonderful!!

Judy is right on the money on making the trek to East Quoddy. It is one of those very special experiences in lighthousing. You have some great lights in your list of lights visited! If you have the opportunity, there are some more great lights on Cape Cod and in the general Boston vicinity. Also, down to the south of you, along the RI and CT shoreline are a number of lights that could be visited in a good weekend.
Of course, moving to Wisconsin will situate you in another lighthouse rich environment. You will have great excuses to get out and explore your new state! Good luck with the move.

My last count was 381 photographed in the US and Mexico. Via car, boat, plane, helicopter and Dune Buggy. I think I still have quite a few to go though, don't I? Ken

Jeff,
I've just added 2 to my total with the two additional ones on the Island of Hawaii that I got to this week. (Cape Kumukahi and Kauholo Point)
That brings mt total to about 230. I'm not positive on the exact number as that info is at home.

just counted ours.... 102 lightouses and 5 light ships so far ... surprising how many you see and photograph... well at least I was suprised. Of course some of these we have visited more than once. I wish it would be possible to visit all the lighthouses and light ships we have stamps and other philatelic materials for. But to visit 1241 lights would take a lifetime and several fortunes. So we make due with looking at stamps for now

Photographed 7 new ones on our recent RV trip to Bar Harbor, Maine (just returned yesterday). Brings the total seen and photographed to 263 as of 6/14/05. Got some we weren't able to see because of fog two years ago (Lubec Channel, Mulhulland (Canadian); weren't able to see 12 others we'd anticipated seeing because the planes were grounded due to offshore fog. Going to try again in September or October when the fog may not be as heavily concentrated offshore.

After the Long Island Challenge, we are up to 143, includes lightships, so, after our next big adventure, HL reunion, 2 weeks vacation, driving and visiting as many as we can, plus taking the WILD cruise, the numbers will jump sky high.

Wow, I feel deprived as I have only visited (forgot exactly) in the mid 30's. Considering that the most that I've seen have been in MI, ME and Cape Cod, with NC just behind ME, (so you know how few I've seen in ME), but the one that I was looking at the other day in my pictures and couldn't remember the name was on the cape and when you came down to a road that you had to make a left (as the lighthouse said private property - CG I believe) so I parked and walked part the way back up the street that I was parked on the side of and took the picture. Anyone know of which light I'm refering? I might be able to dig out the picture and scan it (though I'm still unsure of placing it on forum) if that would help. Steve

John and I have seen 222 lighthouses, 4 lightships, and 7 lifesaving stations in the US since 1996. We have seen several in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, and Bermuda.
I am leaving Monday for Europe for 2 weeks and hope to see more in England, Ireland, Scotland, and Norway.

My list is very short for having lived in VA & WI & loving lh for so long...my number is only roughly around 10 but my husband & I stayed at the Two Harbors, MN Light for a couple of nights in Sept 2002. What a wonderful experience! Drank my coffee out of the Split Rock, MN mug this morning. Looking forward to the HL gathering & all the lights in MI. My number will also grow when I go out to ME to visit my daughter & s-i-l who are moving out this month. They are looking for a home as I type! YoCampMama

Between 100 and 105, depending if ruins are counted or not and 3 Lightships. Also as a side note I have seen 2 First order lens in replica lantern rooms one in Cambria,CA and the other in Portsmouth,VA.

I figured out the numbers after this last trip-
243 Lighthouses, 5 Lightships and 6 Faux Lighthouses
We got to 11 new Lighthouses on this trip and 2 new Lightships. there were also 4 Lighthouses that I had been to on previous trips.
I'm hoping to get to some new ones in MD and VA next month.(and maybe back to some we've been to as well).
Anybody know if they have started tours of Thomas Point yet? We're going to be in the Annapolis area early in July. I was hoping to take that all day long cruise on the Cheapeake but it's not offered the weekend we are there.

Dennis, according to the website www.thomaspointlighthouse.org the dock needs to be expanded to allow the safe passage of people from the ship to the lighthouse. Delays could be till Summer or next Spring. I just sent an email to see if they have an update on the situation (since it is already Summer).

Eric,
Thanks. I thought that was the situation. As it turns out I won't be going to annapolis next weekend after all.
Esther's cousin's son will be having a graduation party and we're going to go to that instead. It's on Saturday so it basically kills the weekend for any trip.
This means I'll have to miss the Poco concert on Friday in Annapolis which was the beginning point for the weekend. That's life.

Dennis, email about Thomas Point to see if opened by Maryland Lighthouse Challenge and the reply was not likely till next Spring.

I figured that would happen. It's tough to get these things moving quickly sometimes- especially when you've got several factions involved.
I'd like it to be available but I'd rather it gets done correctly the first time. sometimes you just have to wait for the good things in life.

Just doing a quick count off the top of my head, I came up with 42 lighthouses and 1 lightship. I need to get off LI more often.

Since all of our vacations are lighthouse trips we have been to and/or photographed 458 lighthouses in the US. We've seen about a dozen or so in Canada and a few in Sweden and England. There are still quite a few left for us to see. Just last week we were able to visit 16 lighthouses on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. They were all beautiful. Our favorite one on this trip was Wolfe Island, Canada. The lighthouse is a six sided building on stilts (kinda like the ones on the Chesapeake Bay). Being in Canada, it of course was red and white. The owners even had a red Corvette in the driveway. My husband would love to live there!!!!
