 Cape Hatteras Closed For Climbing

A chunk of the iron stairway at Hatteras has broken loose and now the lighthouse is closed for climbing indefinitely. Read about the details in the news store right here. I am hoping it will be open by August when I will be vacationing in the Outer Banks.

Certainly hope they determine it can be repaired quickly. Such a shame that this happens just as things were picking up for Cape Hatteras. Let's all hope that more problems are not discovered by the engineer.

Just got back from a trip to the Outer Banks. Seems the brackets holding the stairwell to the inside of the lighthouse had rusted away, in some cases all that was left was a shell of paint.
It could very well be some time before Hatteras opens up again. I wouldn't plan on climbing Hatteras in August, but the grounds are open.
You might want to plan a trip on up to Currituck if you want to do some climbing.
