***With cooperation of the National Park Service, the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society is planning a celebration October 2003! It has been 200 years since the keeper first lit the lamps at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in the original 1803 tower. The celebration is also in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Mark Oct. 17th and 18th on your calendar. We'll have festivities Friday night in Nags Head and all day Saturday at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. We will have nationally-famous authors including (only a sample of their titles are listed) Homer Hickam (Torpedo Junction, Rocket Boys/October Skies, and the upcoming novel The Keeper's Son), Ray Jones (best-selling author of American Lighthouses and upcoming The Encyclopedia of Lighthouses), Kevin Duffus (creator of several videos on Outer Banks history and aforementioned The Lost Light), and others. OBLHS co-founders Bruce Roberts and Cheryl Shelton-Roberts will be there as well. Come and talk with the authors! There will be activities for children, Civil War re-enactors and period music, a special celebration with Bett Padgett (Trefalen, Hatteras, If a Lighthouse Could Speak and Conversations, Surprises & Other Stories) who will head up the music program for 200 years of light at this site, and more. We'll keep you posted on all the details as plans become defined.

We'll have a raffle and auction and lots of surprises. Time/place and other details are to-be-arranged and we'll keep you posted via a list server message, the Lighthouse News newsletter, and on our website.
Thank you for your support! Volunteers are key to keeping our lighthouses and the maritime heritage they represent part of a successful historic preservation story and part of the American experience.
