Via an email.

The lighthouse has also received a facelift including a new paint job. She's really looking good! Funding from the U.S. Coast Guard was provided through the Coast Guard's Civil Engineering Unit in Cleveland, Ohio.

Phase III (final phase) of the Cape Hatteras Light Station Relocation Project has begun with work on a new visitors contact station. By summer 2003, the light station will be looking as good as ever.

The various reports for the restoration process at Bodie Island are nearing completion. The National Park Service stated that funds for the lighthouse are in queue in Congress for 2006.

Further news on events.

***With cooperation of the National Park Service, the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society is planning a celebration October 2003! It has been 200 years since the keeper first lit the lamps at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in the original 1803 tower. The celebration is also in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Mark Oct. 17th and 18th on your calendar. We'll have festivities Friday night in Nags Head and all day Saturday at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. We will have nationally-famous authors including (only a sample of their titles are listed) Homer Hickam (Torpedo Junction, Rocket Boys/October Skies, and the upcoming novel The Keeper's Son), Ray Jones (best-selling author of American Lighthouses and upcoming The Encyclopedia of Lighthouses), Kevin Duffus (creator of several videos on Outer Banks history and aforementioned The Lost Light), and others. OBLHS co-founders Bruce Roberts and Cheryl Shelton-Roberts will be there as well. Come and talk with the authors! There will be activities for children, Civil War re-enactors and period music, a special celebration with Bett Padgett (Trefalen, Hatteras, If a Lighthouse Could Speak and Conversations, Surprises & Other Stories) who will head up the music program for 200 years of light at this site, and more. We'll keep you posted on all the details as plans become defined. http://www.outer-banks.com/lighthouse-society.

There will also be an Outer Banks Lighthouse Society dinner Saturday night, October 18, with keynote speaker Homer Hickam. We'll have a raffle and auction and lots of surprises. Time/place and other details are to-be-arranged and we'll keep you posted via a list server message, the Lighthouse News newsletter, and on our website.

Thank you for your support! Volunteers are key to keeping our lighthouses and the maritime heritage they represent part of a successful historic preservation story and part of the American experience.

Safe journeys and safe harbors,

Outer Banks Lighthouse Society

Isn't that the same weekend as the NJ Lighthouse Challenge? Two biggies on the east coast on the same weekend.

I also wouldn't try to go there during the month of December - one hundredth anniversary of the Wright Brother's first flight.
