Every year Split Rock lighthouse shines its bright beacon out upon Lake Superior for one night. That night is November, 10 the aniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Mindy and I were lucky enough to be there in '98...this was just after our addiction to Harbour Lights began. We didn't know that Split Rock was going to be lit that night and when were driving home from a trip into Canada on a dark stormy night we saw a light in the distance. We were about 15 miles away and every few seconds we would see this flash of white light. For the life of us we could not figure out what it was? As we got closer our hearts jumped out of our bodies...It was Split Rock...I had to restrain myself from putting the pedal to the metal in order to get there faster....we arrived at about 6:30 I believe and we rushed into the ranger office to see what was going on. She told us that every year the light is turned on to remember all the sailors that have lost there lives on the Great Lakes and in special memory of the Edmund Fitzgerald. We hurried to the parking area and walked the path to Split Rock. Due to the heavy rain and cold weather, only two other people were there viewing the light and they left soon after we arrived. We got to enjoy Split Rock all alone for about 20 minutes. It was so amazing...
I highly reccomend to anyone in the area to go to Split Rock on November 10 in the future. You will not be disappointed!
Here is a link to my photos...unfortunately the rain was a problem...but you can still see how cool Split Rock looks!!!
