This past weekend, Robert and I drove up to Delaware to join the volunteers to go out in the Bay to work on the Breakwater/East End light.
Are we crazy, or what???COLD...COLD...COLD.
Anyhow, we boarded the launch at Slaughter Beach. The launch came back in from another trip to pick us up around 9am.
We were about a mile out into the Bay when the decision was made to scrap the mission. The ice was getting worse as we proceeded and a 45 minute trip was turning into a 3 hour trip, plus would they be able to get back to us to pick us up and bring us home. We all had visions of spending the night in the Breakwater, and/or visualizing a plan to cross the ice to the beach at the park.
Graciously, Bob Trapani offered to take us up to Liston Rear Range since we all drove so far. Here we all are at the base of the light.
We were given the rate opportunity to climb (177 steps) to the lantern room and go out on the landing. This part of the light will not be open to the general public, but they will be able to view the light from the watch room.
Beacuse of the pending storm heading up the east coast, we decided to head home and not stay over till Sunday. But what a great trip we had, experiencing the icy bay, and Liston Rear Range light.
