I have a mystery. I have 2 ancestors who were shipmen of some kind, Captains say family history. James and Michael Burns. James dies on June 26, 1864 lost in one of those Great Lakes mishaps, on lake Huron. I only got a few notes on this, it was the brig "Globe" and it went down supposedly near the lighthouse at Pointe Aux Barques, Lake Huron.
I write historical stuff, usually non-fiction. But I'm trying my hand at fiction with historical facts. Anyway I want to use him as a character and I can't seem to find this particular wreck. Any guesses?
Having never been to that part of the country, are there unknown wrecks near the lighthouse? I'm looking at a lot of known mishaps but can't seem to find this particular one.
Any sugestions?
Todays events are tomorrow's history.

Cindy,
Being on the NE side of the Michigan thumb, there are plenty of shipwrecks around Point aux Barques and all of Lake Huron. Not too far north, the area around Alpena is referred to as Shipwreck Alley.
Couple of sources you might try are the Museum of the Inland Seas in Vermillion, Ohio, where they have an extensive library; or, the Whitefish Point Light Station where they have quite a bit about shipwrecks as I recall.

Terry Pepper is a good suggestion Grace. There was a woman on our HL reunion cruise, Sandy Planisek, who was pretty knowledgeable also. Terry, though is the one I would start with. Judy

Sandy is super, of course! Have you seen her latest book about the Mackinaw? It is terrific; I will have to post about it in the Reading Room - need to report other stuff in that thread. Falling down on the job but will catch up soon!

Wow you guys are a wealth of information! Jeepers, I wish I would have found your list a year ago!
Thank you so much. There sure were a lot of "Globes" wern't there? I will try contacting the places Dave H. mentioned too and check out that weblink you have. What is the link to Terry Pepper's website?
I did find a ship captain too named James Burns but that is kind of a common name so I got to dig into that more too.
I contacted Judy at the Pointe Aux Barques Lighthouse museum and they are being so kind and are going to look in the lighthouse keepers journals.
I want to try and make it to their festival in August of 2007 and take some pictures and do some research.
Thanks you guys and gals for all your help and I will keep you posted!
Todays events are tomorrow's history.
