an article written in the forums somewhere about how to photograph lighthouses at night? I remember reading it about a year ago and I can't seem to find it.

Great article. Don't know how I missed it before. Thanks to Gary for writing it and to John for making it available via link again.

I had been planning on trying to photograph the Chicago Harbor lighthouse with the full moon for past few years now. After reading Gary's tips on night time photography and finally being home on the night of a full moon, having clear weather, I went to Navy pier in Chicago last Wednesday night, got there about 45 minutes before the sunset got a few pictures then waited about another 45 minutes after the sunset for the moon to rise. I was fairly happy with the pictures considering they were my first night shots, here is a link to the PhotoPoint page Chicago Lighthouse with the full moonMark [This message has been edited by Mark Wagner (edited 09-17-2000).]

Nice Job Mark! Now you need to work with an astronomer and find out when the moon will rise closer to the light, while shooting from the vantage point. Cloned for example... SaintWackoPaul ' Keep the Flame

Nice job, Mark.
Catching the moon in a time exposure is difficult because it's really 'moving' pretty fast (actually the earth is rotating fast.) A time exposure of 30 seconds or more will probably blur the moon.

Paul, there was another guy out there taking pictures too, he told me that he had been out there 4 out of the last 5 full moons taking pictures and he did tell me that in early summer the moon is nearly in line with the lighthouse. And John he was also taking a picture exactly every 3 minutes with the same frame and told me that it stacked the moons perfectly with 3 minute gaps acording to him "the moon moves it's own height every 3 minutes" I do have one picture I exposed about 1 1/2 minutes that shows how much the moon moved during the time. Most of the exposures were about 45 seconds to a minute. With my second roll of film I zoomed out to a wider picture hoping to capture more of the reflection on the water but those pictures were not nearly as good as the first roll (the posted pictures)

Nice job with the pictures, Mark. You did catch the reflection of the light in the water, so not all is lost (after all, that is the most important part of a lighthouse pic!)
