Tim - Keeping the flame lit...

There is a great deal of great information, but there is also at least one piece of misinformation.

The Pelican Bay site lists the date for Sandy Hook as 1794. The correct date is of course 1764. And yes I'm sure it says 1794, not 1764.

Nobody's perfect. I sent an email on to them about their small error.

Sorry folks, but Oak Island has an elevator in its tower also and it is not in Charleston. I think these websites just copy other books and websites for their sometimes miss-information. I didn't ride in the elevator, but it is there, both Sue and I remembering seeing it on our excellent lighthouse adventure last year, on our way back from Cape Hatteras.

That’s two wrong so far for the Pelican Bay site.

Maybe the trivia here is which trivia is correct!

I think I may spotted at least one other trivia listed on that site that is in error, but I will check my facts.... let's see if someone else can figure out which one it might be.....

I'll say this for them- they responded quickly to my message and agreed it was in error and will fix it.

They did state what you said- they got it from a source and will in turn tell them they have it wrong. In the case of the date i think someone just turned the 6 upside down and no one noticed.

It's a little harder to lose an elevator.

On that subject i've been told, but cannot confirm this, that the elevator in Sullivans Island (which is in Charleston) has never worked properly. It cannot be used to take anything up, only down. apparently it cannot hold anything more than it's empty weight for the trip up.

I don't know about anybody else, but I'm not getting in any elevator that only works one way.

Anybody out there who can confirm this bit of information?

I'm going to go back and see if i can figure out the other possible mistake you found.

The Webmaster of the Pelican Bay Website, Gary, e-mailed me expressing his interest in having the Pelican Bay site's information to be as factual as he can possibly get it. I for one really appreciate this kind of concern for accuracy. He has already removed the reference to the elevator in Charleston’s tower being the only one located in American.

He also has already corrected the wording of the other trivia that was not correct as it appeared before. It was that the Statue of Liberty was the first lighthouse to use electricity. It now is correct as it states the first American lighthouse to use electricity. The following are two links and quotes from them showing that South Foreland first used it in 1858 some 8 years before the Statue of Liberty. In fact apparently the US Lighthouse Board used information that was gathered from South Foreland to establish their efforts in New York.

It's great when people can help each other and appreciate it for what it is.

That's one of the great things about the forums. We can correct each other and no one takes it wrong. It looks like tthe webmaster at Pelican Bay fits the same mold.

I was on the wrong track in my search for the mistake.
