I'd like to see a LE of Fort Jefferson Light, Dry Tortugas Islands, Florida (in the Gulf off of Key West). It is a unique light with an intersting history (Dr. Samuel Mudd was incarcerated there, among other things).

For those of you who have been there:
(A) Do you agree? and
(B) What is the best way to sculpt this one?
(1) entire fort (light itself would probably be lost in this scale)
(2) portion of fort (similar to Alcatraz -- remainder of building "broken" away)
(3) light only

I second (again) the recommendation of Ft Jefferson. A sculpture depicting part of the fort with the light (a la Alcatraz) would be perfect. This would be a great opportunity for HL to challenge their sculptors & artisans. And doing a (separate) piece depicting Loggerhead Key would be great as well!

I seem to remember pre- HL-dot-com days, that BY has been to the Dry Tortugas photographing that LH.

A perfectly GOOD reason then to do the lighthouse and make amends to the poor Doctor whose name was dragged through the wet earth [thought I was going to say something else, didn't you] for just following his hippocratic oath.

Maybe I can be exhiled there, listening to Jimmy Buffet tapes.

I believe Bill HAS been to the light. I was looking over the photographs that everyone submitted early Sunday morning with Bill at the reunion, and he pointed out a photograph someone took of it and asked if I knew which light it was (testing my knowledge). He seemed very familiar with it, so I assumed he had already been there.

Dear Dr. M.F.S.N. (Mudd For Sure Now), and you others who may be in the know:

Is there a strong correlation between a Bill visit to a light and the production of a HL? If so, any ideas on the typical lag time between the two? Or does Bill keep things too murky to relate one to the other?

HL could really score big with this one...a cut-away section of the fort, with the black cast-iron lantern atop, surrounded by a coral sand beach, blue-green waves, and a shipwreck jutting from the waves! Was there earlier this year and it's breathtaking!

With the posting of Derith's photos, this seems like an opportune time to resurrect this one. ;-)

Nice work, Derith!

Thanks, Derith, for sharing your beautiful photos with all of us. I agree that Dry Tortugas would make an interesting miniature, especially with parts of the fort and coastline in it. I love your photo of Alligator Reef and think that it, along with American Shoals, would also be great additions to the HL Collection. By using a new medium of acrylic (clear blue-green water) HL could show the coral reefs below the surface of the water. Can't wait to see your next gallery Derith. Stunning!!!
