HI - does anyone know the value of the retired LE Cape Neddick? Is a piece more valuable if it is signed?

Since Nubble Light is my favorite lighthouse I would love to have it but I don't want to pay more than it is worth to obtain one.

Is there a price guide for retired Harbour Lights?

thanks very much

Hi AJ. There seems to be no current price guide to the secondary prices for HL's. Some of our collectors tracked prices on e-bay for several months and you can see some 2000 prices here: http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/forums/Forum28/HTML/000042.html
You can also see some early 2001 prices here: http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/forums/Forum28/HTML/000087.html
Looks like Cape Nedick LE was going for an average of $150.00 or so back then, and I don't think the market is up a lot since then.

Folks who have a signed piece to sell will promote that, but there's no pricing evidence that a signature makes a piece worth more. Some folks like 'em plain, some like 'em signed - personal preference. If BY dated his signature and the date is in the year of issuance, or if he wrote something witty or interesting, that signature *might* be worth a v. small premium.

For mid-range models (those selling for $125-$300 on the secondary) today's prices look a lot like secondary prices in 1997. In that year an average secondary price for a Cape Neddick was around $180. In 1999 - just before the collapse of the market - it was going for about $230. A quick check of e-Bay doesn't show any LE Cape Neddick sales in the 10 days.

Cape Neddick was been on the market for about 14 months before it retired and its been 2486 days since it retired. Its a popular tourist light and its desirabilty tracks close to that of Montauk so it tends to hold its value pretty well. Based on that my guesstimate on a reasonable price puts it in the $165-$190 range.

In the 2002 Collector's Mart Price Guide to Limited Edition Collectibles it has Cape Neddick's value at $230.00. I personally think that is a little too high. I feel that if you are patient that you can probably wait and pick one up in the $150-$175 price range. Keep a check on the market forum and Ebay. If I had a choice I would pay a little more and buy off the forum. I feel it is safer that way and you are at least buying from a forum member.
