I have a request . Since I do not live near any lighthouses or get to visit many I was wondering if my fellow HL collectors would send me a postcard from their local/favorite lighthouses. I would love to put together a scrapbook of wonderful sights. You can mail it to:
Pat Palmer-Ball (KYKEEPER)
5504 Felker Way
Louisville, KY 40291

Thanks to all for making this Forum such a joy to visit and see the sights other see.

Hi Pat,

When I visited St. Augustine and Ponce last month, I picked up extra postcards and I will be happy to send you one of each. It was my first lighthouse experience, and it makes me very happy to share it with you.

Hey Pat,
We just got back from The Outer Banks and I knew I picked up extra postcards for some reason
Seeing as how you sent me a very nice postcard of the Block Island stamp issued on July,99 I figure it's the least I can do to return the favor.
It has all 5 OuterBanks LH's on it.

What will you do if you get "doubles"?

I'll send you some from my recent trip to CA and OR. I've got several duplicates. My brother used to live in Louisville, along with about 15 other places. Dennis

Hi Pat -

I hope you have a very large bookcase you can use to store all the postcards you are likely to begin receiving.

I have a request to piggyback onto Pat's. I just mailed out some postcards (that i picked up on my trip to CA/OR last month) to Pat. I asked her a favor in return and I'm asking anyone else looking in the same thing- I discovered when we got home that we had inadvertantly used some of the post cards I was saving as aactual post cards. i'd appreciate it if anybody out there can get a hold of any of the following postcards that they would send them to me- Old Point Loma, New Point Loma, Pt. Fermin, Pt. Vincente, Pt Bonita, Fort Point, Pt. Cabrillo, Trinidad Head and Oakland Harbor. I managed to save at least one of the 12 LH's we visited on the trip.I thank you in advance for any assistance you can be. Dennis

Yesterday was a great day at the mailbox. I received 2 packets of lighthouse postcards from Brent and Dennis. No Duplicates and all are wonderful. Brent what a lovely card depicting the sad state of Charity Island. Is there any news on a restoration effort? I loved each note on the postcards, that was very thoughtful.
So far I have received:
Peggy's Cove, Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras, Cape Henry, Assateague, Currituck Beach, Point Pinos, Coquille,St. George Reef, Alcatraz,Point Sur, Point Reyes, Chicago Harbor, and a large card with the Outer Banks Lighthouses in a row.
Dennis, If I get duplicates of the lighthouses you listed I will most certainly send them to you. Have you tried contacting any of the areas around the lighthouses (like Hallmark dealers). They might be able to assist you in getting the ones you are missing.
Now I can't wait to see what the mailbox will hold today.

Thanks Everyone!

Pat...with regard to your question about Charity Island....as far as I know nothing has been done to restore it yet. However, there may be a "light" at the end of the tunnel. Apparently General Motors has bought the Island from the previous private owner so maybe they will do something with it. Lets keep our fingers crossed....it really is a lovely old "light" with a rich history. Since its been privately owned...the local community hasn't been particularily interested in putting money into someone else's "asset". When I did the pen & ink drawing... the purpose was to arouse regional interest, and it did that, however, that's ALL it did and nothing else. Maybe now [w/GM onboard] this "light" might have a future.

Pat: I will be sending you a postcard from our NELL trip to CT, of Stonington Lighthouse; and one of Boston Harbor. So you can add those to your list.

I have never been to Wind Point when anything was open ---- do they have a gift shop. I can get you a card if I visit there during the Milwaukee HL Regional ---- if for some reason your plans to attend don't work out. Let me know.

Have you tried going to "collectible"/antique stores to find old postcards of lighthouses? There are usually postcard clubs in major cities and they may hold swap/sales. Try the library for a listing of area clubs.

Jeremy D'Entremont's NE website has old postcards to view on most of the New England lights. www.lighthouse.cc
Maybe he could give you a clue as to where to find the older ones.

Do you have a big empty wall in your house? You could mount your cards to make a collage, or is it montage, and put a sheet of plexiglass over it.

Have fun with your new hobby.

Hi Pat,
Your quest has sent me off in a direction of antique postcards of lighthouses that have "crossed the bar". Maybe I can even find some in antique shops. Anyway, I happened onto the New Jersey Lighthouse Society's page today and found a link to antique cards of New Jersey lights. Many are no longer but what interesting postcards full of houses and surroundings that you don't find near those lights today.

If anyone knows of places to get old postcards other than antique shops let me know. I don't want to use ebay..I want to get up close and personal before I purchase them.

Some stamp and coin shops have old postcards, but your best bet is to go to a Postcard Show . Fortunately we have several during the year here in upstate NY. Also some Book Fairs and Ephemera Shows have postcard dealers.
Good hunting!!

Uh Oh. Just when I decide to help you out Pat, along comes Dennis. Went to my dealers this morning and while R@Ring, purchased a post card with Trinidad Light for you. But Dennis needs it as well.

OK, I'll go back out there tomorrow and pick up another one. Can't seem to find any of Table Bluff Light or what remains of it. Will send it if I see it.

Perhaps you can post the lighthouses you have already received a postcard of. Then we won't duplicate.

I have gotten so many wonderful postcards. I will post all the names soon. As a matter of fact I received another one yesterday. They are slowing down but I wish with this being summer they would pick up again. Jo Ann if you could post your pictures that would be great for everyone to see. I am only collecting postcards for my scrapbook. Brent, you are the most faithful in sending postcards and I really want to thank you for that. Maybe someday I can return the favor.
Thanks to all, and Please keep sending those postcards.

Hi Pat, I have been exploring the forums pages and came across this page. I also collect postcards. I've collected postcards for years of all my vacations and when Roy and I started collecting Harbour Lights it was only natural that I continue my collection with as many beautiful pieces of history as possible. I will look through what I have and see what doubles I have. I'll look for your updated list of what you have and see if I have anything you may need. Happy Collecting Carolyn

Hi Pat,
Visited Cape Meares and Tillamook Rock Lighthouses this weekend--had to get the stamps for our USLHS passports. Am sending you 3 postcards including one with all the Oregon Lighthouses and a brochure that tells about each lighthouse in Oregon. So how big is the collection now? Take care.

Hi everyone I promise to get an updated list out here for you to see by this weekend. I have been up to my ears in Wedding Planning lately so working on a list has been pushed aside.
To all my faithful postcard senders I say once again Thank You . The number of cards have dropped off but every once and a while Brent, Dennis, Jack, Rich or Darlene surprise me with another gift.
Please Keep sending the cards and I promise to post a list.

Thanks.....

Check your flea markets for old postcards.
For people who collect them (I don't really), there maybe a dealer.
I just got back from the Ohio State Fair this weekend where I found a flea dealer selling old postcards. I picked up a postmarked Portland Head (1949) for a buck.
I didn't know that the roof of that light used to be green.
Good Luck!

Brent...can't wait to see the cards . Yes I will have room, I'll just expand the book . Also I am still planning on getting the list of all the postcards posted here. I have just been so busy . But I will try and get it done soon. I was looking at them this past weekend and am surprised that there are not to many duplicates. And the lighthouses I have duplicates of are different in picture so not really a duplicate.
Anyway, thanks again to everyone who continues to think of me when they are visiting lighthouses . It is great to have friends!

Hi Pat!
I have been reading over your quest for lighthouse postcards. That was a great idea.
I live in Pennsylvania and we have one lighthouse. I have been to a few lighthouses
and started my postcard collection. I don't
have very many, though. I have been checking
on E-bay but there is not much on there. Your idea was great!

Hi "K".....welcome aboard!! If you e-mail your address I'll be glad to send you some "extra's" that I still have. I enjoy doing it...especially to those who don't get a chance to see the "lights" very often.

Welcome, K.

Actually there are three lights in PA, all in or near Erie. You have the Erie Land Light, the Erie Pier Light and Presque Isle. Just skimming thru my brand new Lighthouse Digest, I noticed a piece that says they have located the foundation of the original Erie Light, which the article states was the first light on the Great Lakes. The ruins are just a couple hundred yards from the current light.

Hi Brent and Everyone who has contributed to my wonderful collection of postcards.
To date I have 153 Lighthouse Postcards. I have really enjoyed receiving them, especially the ones with little notes on them. Since the 2 postcard exchanges have started the postcards to me have pretty much stopped , but I understand. Anyway, I love the ones I have received and will continue to look in the mailbox for future mailings. Someday I hope to be able to return the favor to those who have been very gracious in their time and efforts.
For a list of the cards I have received look at my page at: http://hometown.aol.com/patvoytek/myhomepage/index.html
