For those interested in Maine, particularly those who will be going on Dave's trip in October, check out the Spring issue of the USLHS Keeper's Log. The articles in the Log always provide great reading, but there is a particularly good one on Burnt Island Light Station in this issue. Burnt Island is one of the lights we will see in October.

The article, written by Elaine Jones of the Maine Department of Marine Resources, is full of all kinds of good information about and pictures of the light and, particularly, about Keeper James McCobb. He left a wonderful log with lots of personal information included in his daily entries about the lighthouse. This, despite the fact that the inspector had directed him to use the log only for "recording important events, bad weather, orders received, etc."

There is also an article about mercury and its use in lighthouse history written by James Woodward. Remember his fantastic talk at the reunion? He has such vast knowledge; it was great that we had the opportunity to hear him.

The Keeper's Log sounds like a very interesting publication.

It is great! It is the "membership journal" of the US Lighthouse Society. Many of us are members. You can go to the website at www.USLHS.org to check out membership.

James Woodward is one special person. I had the great opportunity of working and learning from him as a "lampist apprentice" during the month of March, 2005. The photo is of Beth Deese, Woody, and myself nearing the completion of the restoration of the Hatteras lens. We were all tired puppies at that point and I was miserable with a sinus infection. Really attractive photo!
But it was an experience of a lifetime. Shirin Pagels and Betty Parrish, also members here, worked on this project with Woody that month.

Here's Jim Woodward and crew preparing to raise a restored lens panel into position.

The lens is now on display at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras, North Carolina.

Sorry to sidetrack a bit, Grace.

Judy, sidetracking of this sort is very welcome. I can't believe all of you had such a fantastic experience! Not only to work on a lens, but the Cape Hatteras lens and not just with anyone but with world renowned Lampist James Woodward! Talk about an extraordinary experience. How cool is that?! cool Thanks for telling us about this and for posting the pictures.
