Good Monday Afternoon!
I have announced to Dealers through a special eMail a NEW marketing initiative relating to "Great Lighthouse of the World" (GLOWS). Harbour Lights has suspended from production (54) GLOWS. In the parlance of the collectible world it simply means those (54) GLOWS will not be produced any longer. (30) GLOWS will be core in the Collection with an occasional new release. I will release the list to John Chidester, in the AM,after all Dealers have received the eMail, in order that the website be marked accordingly. If you are interested in learning what is in and what is out CALL a Harbour Lights Dealer!
Call me with specific questions 800.365.1219.

Thanks for the notice Tony.
Instead of numerous collectors bothering dealers for the same request, why doesn't someone retrieve the information and then post it somewhere.
It seems silly to me that everyone who wishes to make note in their collection or inventory lists which pieces are going to be "suspended" to contact a dealer and ask the same question, "Which GLOWS are suspended?" over and over again.

Christoper, thanks for the list !!!
So basicly, these 54 are now limited editions. If so, will a final production number be available???

The reason people are directed to a dealer is to try to help keep the line alive. Any opportunity to get a collector in touch with a dealer gives the dealer a chance to keep in touch with collectors and maybe even make a sale. Have to find any way possible to get collectors talking with dealers or the remaining dealers will have no reason to continue carrying the line. Need the dealers to sell the product.
Tough decision, I am sure, to take 2/3 if the GLOW line out of production. Surprised that some of those did not have the sales to support continuing production, but the decision also speaks to what is going on with collectibles and other discretionary purchases.

Could this be HL way of actually expanding the limited edition dealership? Many of the HL dealers are limited to the GLOW and LLOM line of products. It will also cut down on dealer inventory which has always been a major complaint of dealers, as well as resolving the space issue.
The question is whether or not these non LE dealers will pick-up the LE in lieu of losing the GLOW and LLOM. It's just a thought of my marketing mind.

I guess I have to wonder if this is a new sales stratagy to focus on the GLOWs that sell good, or a way to put more focus back on the LE's, or maybe just a cost cutting move to save the HL line in general.
Many of these GLOWs aren't selling, for obvious reasons. Interesting too is no new LLOM's this year.
Sorry if I'm just rambling on here. I've probably over analized the latest news from Tony. To me, it just sounds like the HL folks are making cost cutting moves in these rough times. If it is, it's a smart move.

Where's Tim (from days long past)? Will this resurrect the argument that if a GLOW/OE is no longer produced, should it be considered a limited edition? Bob

Please note the word 'suspended'. I would take this to mean that no more will be manufactured unless there is a sufficient demand to make at least the minimum size order. This may be 500 pieces. If there is an inventory at Harbour Lights, it also means that inventory would still be available to dealers. Hadn't realized Tony posted a clarification here . I have requested production quantities, but I doubt we'll get that since many of these were introduced under the ownership of the Youngers and production counts may not be available. More later today.

Good Tuesday Afternoon!
May I suggest that peole go to their local Public Library and look for Paul Stark's "Everything you wanted to know about Collectibles"
then come back and talk about the secondary market value of GLOWS and the secondary market value of limited editions. You miss the art of collecting in your posts!
Also with the exception of one regular no one has called me to ask why?

well it would be expensive for me to call either my dealer or you, Tony. That is one reason I haven't ...
and my library has not got that book either ...

Thanks Keeperpam for the link to the past. It was very interesting reading.
One of Bob M's post states that we don't know what the future will hold. Kind of gave me an eerie feeling now knowing some of the future!

By my quick count Harbour Lights has made 87 GLOW replicas of 82 lighthouses (5 were 'retired and revised').
Of the 82, 54 have now been suspended/discontinued leaving GLOW replicas of 28 which might be continued so long as there is a sufficient demand for them.
Dealers have an opportunity to help reduce the inventory of these 54 GLOWs now in the warehouses at a discount.

Interesting reading the link to the past that KeeperPam posted.
According to some collectors the 1999 CS limited edition Baltimore (edition size: 26,748) would be considered more a collectable then the 2007 Baltimore Glow (edition size: probably only around 500, due to product suspendion)???

Not to make a "mountain" out of a "mole hill", "beat a dead horse" or to argue over "wording" but I believe the word used regarding the Open Editions mentioned above was "Suspended" . Am I correct on this? Now if I am, and if I am correct that the meaning of "suspended" means that an item may someday once again be produced, then why does the website for Lighthouse Depot (LHD), another venture of the parent company Lighthouse Marketing which also owns Harbour Lights, use the word "Discontinued" for many of the same Open Edition lights recently announced on January 19th. LHD Discontinued Open Edition Lights Perhaps the website maintainers ment to say, "Discounted", which many of the 54 announced lights are if you take a look, instead of "Discontinued". Not that it matters to me as I don't really support or purchase many Open Edition pieces..... I was just wondering are the warehouses that full(?)

Looks like only LHD is discounting them, at 33% off list. But not all the suspended GLOWs are on sale.
I wonder if any other dealers will do the same?

Taking a quick look at the LHD site, I saw "clearance" used to describe the items on sale.
As Tony pointed out in another thread, the term suspended is out of the NALED book, and leaves the door open for resumption of production of these items. Not very likely they will be brought back, but it is possible under the suspended concept.

Can't blame HL for trying to keep their collectibles alive while trying to survive in this economy. I heard on the radio today that it usually takes about 16 months for things to turn around. Sure hope they are wrong and it happens sooner!
