I was putting out my Christmas Lighthouses last night, and for the first time had a chance to compare them all side by side. So I thought, wouldn't it be interesting to have a survey, ranking the lighthouses 1 - 5.

I think to be fair all votes, we should differentiate among a)owning all 5; b) being able to view all 5 in person (no pictures there really is a huge difference between holding an HL and looking at pictures); c) owning any, view the rest; d) don't own any. So tell me your category, please rank you choices 1 - 5, tell me whether you own it, and tell me the city and state you live in.
Lastly, lets vote for a good candidate for the future. Select a lighthouse that you've seen at Christmas time that does it up big time with tasteful decorations. This lighthouse must be one that Harbour Lights does not currently produce.

And the NOMINEES are:
www.HarbourLights.com/catalog/catalog_christmas.htm revised12/19/1999 Thankyou Paul and John!

example
?category? - A
1 - Big Bay 1995 - own
2 - Colchester Reef 1996 - no
3 - White Shoal 1997 - own
4 - Old Field Point 1998 - own
5 - East Quoddy 1999 - waiting to be delivered
?city, state? - El Cajon, Ca
?Future Christmas Lighthouse?

I will tally the results (December 23), and even give regional choices if we have enough response.

This should be fun, please participate!

I own all 5.

1. White Shoal
2. East Quoddy
3. Old Field Point
4. Big Bay Point
5. Colchester Reef

I really Like all five.

As for a new Christmas piece, I say the Point Abino Lighthouse. I know it's another Canadian light, but it's really cool.

I own (and love) all five and they look great with a few Dept. 56 snow-covered trees placed around them on the same display table!

1. Old Field Point
2. East Quoddy Head
3. White Shoal
4. Big Bay Point
5. Colchester Reef

6. Scotch Cap, Alaska? (pre-1946, never seen it in person but it would make a great tribute to the men who perished there from the tsunami)

Livermore, CA

I'm in Category A representing the Southern Region. No nomination for the 2000 piece. I haven't visited any in the winter to know how they decorate.

I own all five and proudly display them during the Christmas Season. Listing them as favorites in order would be as follows:

1. East Quoddy (I think this HL is great!)
2. White Shoal (I love red & white on the lights!)
3. Big Bay (Very nicely done!)
4. Old Field (I visited this one on Columbus Day Weekend and it is probably a tie between this one and Big Bay).
5. Colchester Reef (I'm not overly excited over this HL).
6. (??) I always display Presque Isle PA with my Christmas HLs, it's another fine winter piece.

What would I like to see for Christmas 2000? I really don't know. Yes, I would love to see West Quoddy as a Christmas piece. I favor red and white lights. I guess I'll have to pass on a definite decision for now.

I'm a Category A.

1. East Quoddy
2. White Shoal
3. Big Bay Point
4. Colchester Reef
5. Old Field Point

Eureka, CA

How about Battery Point Light, Crescent City, CA. With their Historical Society keepers that actually live there, I'd bet they decorate. Or maybe it's finally a chance for Fort Gratiot Light, Port Huron, MI, although we only decorated the detached quarters, not the lighthouse.

Own all but Big Bay

1. East Quoddy
2. White Shoal
3. Old Field
4. Big Bay
5. Colchester

Kokomo, IN still waiting for snow

Believe a Christmas HL really needs to be from the north, where it does snow from time to time. I had also considered Point Aux Barques because of its setting - think it could be a nice Christmas piece.

Next year? Can't wish for anything right now, sorry.
As far as being decorated for Xmas, most of us don't know what is and what isn't, but as HL only adds minor decoration what difference does it make? Anything not yet done that gets snow would be fine.

Category a-Own them all. 1. Old Field Point 2. East Quoddy 3. Big Bay 4. Colchester Reef 5. White Shoal. I have the whole set displayed by my computer. I also have the matching Ornament displayed with them. All but East Quoddy (next year maybe). I have to agree with the next post- Hereford Inlet would be nice for next year. 1. White Shoal
2. East Quoddy
3. Big Bay Point
4. Old Field Point
5. Colchester Reef

While not a Christmas release, honorable mention will go to Presque Isle.

I live in Morgantown, WV...a lighthouseless state

Next Christmas??? How about Hereford Inlet.

2. Old Field Point (Hope to get soon)

I like the West Quoddy Idea to go with the East Quoddy for 2000

Next Christmas I would like to see Heceta Head done with the lightkeepers cottage in the piece. I know they have to decorate that light. No snow, but cold hangs in the air, even on a summer night. Or, a FL light would be nice with a Santa on water skis in the water nearby. Of course, he would be dressed in a FL Santa suit.

I'm really not familiar with the decorations on various lights, except for Nubble, of course! I like Mike's idea about West Quoddy Head, and Rich's suggestion about Battery Point Light, a beautiful little light.

I'm from Murrysville, PA not too far from Pittsburgh.

I'd like to see any lighthouse as long as it hasn't been sculpted before, with the caveat that it have something to set it off as being a bit unusual or different in some manner (trees, outbuildings, rock outcroppings, ice floes, etc.)

Big Bay
White Shoals
East Quoddy
Old Field Point
Colchester Reef

I keep them put away until Christmas and use them as part of my Christmas decorations. I'd like to see them make the Christmas piece look like Christmas (i.e., decorated). No specific one in mind.

As I am still pretty new to HL, I only own 1 Christmas piece, East Quoddy. It is magnificently done and I wish that I owned all 5 of them (if they are anything like this one!).

No opinion on a future Christmas LH.

Thanks for a fun post!

Category A - have 'em all.

1) White Shoal - the first Christmas piece I bought; had to have it!
2) East Quoddy - saw the lighthouse right before it arrived at my dealer's, so it's special.
3) Big Bay - love those footprints!
4) Old Field Point
5) Colchester Reef

Berea, OH (near Cleveland)

I'd really like to see West Quoddy as a Christmas piece, but if equal time needs to be given to the West coast, I'm intrigued by the idea of East Brother decorated for Christmas, even without snow.

4. White Shoal
5. Colchester Reef

Hey Dave - Battery Point in CA is further North than New York City. As for snow Mombo, the West Coast seldom gets it, but we still have Christmas. East Brother would be nice as well. I know Nancy prefers the single self contained light with keeper's quarters in same building for Christmas pieces. Battery Point meets that view.

I consulted my better half for the ranking, her choices are:

1 - East Quoddy
2 - Big Bay Point
3 - Colchester Reef
4 - Old Field Point
5 - White Shoal

I'd like to see East Point, New Jersey. It's got a red roof and red brick construction showing through the faded whitewash. It would look right at home with some snow around and few wintering surf scoters on the Delaware Bay that is the front yard.

I have them all except East Quoddy (which I'm sure Santa will bring me for Christmas). In order of preference:
1. Big Bay (More than twice the next runner up. I love the footprints in the snow leading out to the Snowman)
2. Old Field Point
3. East Quoddy
4. White Shoal
5. Colchester Reef

Sandwich, Mass

No preference for next year as long as it has snow on it!!!

Own all five.

1 Old Field Point
2 Big Bay Point
3 East Quoddy
4 Colchester Reef
5 White Shoal

Also include the snow covered Presque Isle in the display along with 12 snow covered ornaments.

I live in the Florida Keys. Don't think there is a chance of seeing any of our lights covered with snow.

1. Big Bay -- need it
2. East Quoddy -- got it
3. White Shoal -- got it
4. Old Field Point -- got it
5. Colchester Reef -- got it

Hailing from West Tennessee

I'd like to see Caribou Island made. It's in Lake Superior on the Canadian side. Seems more like the middle of the lake if you live there, I guess.

I own all five.

1. East Quoddy Head
2. White Shoal
3. Old Field Point
4. Colchester Reef
5. Big Bay Point

I would like to see something from the west coast that hasn't been done before for next year

Same as Richard!

Future piece? HL has done a fine job so far in picking and sculpting great Christmas lighthouses - I'll leave it up to them.

OK here goes!
1a. East Quoddy (visited before the Providence reunion)
1b. Big Bay (I have 2 different variations and Sue and I stayed there this summer)
1c. White Shoal (chartered a Captain and his boat to go out to the light 2 years ago)
1d. Old Field Point (I have 2 different variations.. one with part of red sled showing and one with the bottom branches of replacement tree touching the snow)
5. Colchester (was my first Christmas piece)
Indy... Go Colts!!

Michigan City Lighthouse (not the pier light, which has been done) shown below.

I own all but White Shoal.

1. Big Bay Point
2. East Quoddy
3. Colchester Reef
4. Old Field Point
5. White Shoal

That's the call from southern New Jersey, where we're getting some snow flakes right now.

It's fascinating to see the wide variety of favorites. I guess that's why HL makes so many statues.

Cat. A
1 White Shoal (my personal all-time favorite)
2 East Quoddy (a definite WOW)
3 Big Bay (broke important ground)
4 Old Field (wish it had the bare tree)
5 Colchester Reef (a good statue, but someone has to be fifth)

I own all 5 and have only Visited East Quoddy. Colchester Reef is next on the agenda. Since everyone loves countdowns, here's mine in reverse order...

5. Colchester Reef (1996)
4. Old Field Point (1998)
3. White Shoal (1997)
2. East Quoddy (1999)
1. Big Bay Point (1995) Why #1? Because it seems to embody what I consider the perfect setting for a "classic" old-fashioned Christmas. A very distinctive, Currier & Ives look that the others just don't have.

What should they make next? Well, they won't do West Quoddy even though they should. So I'd say Marshall Point, Maine. That would kick serious booty.

I'm a Category A.

1. East Quoddy
2. White Shoal
3. Big Bay Point
4. Old Field Point
5. Colchester Reef

I'm in Louisiana. I've only visited New Canal at Christmas which HL's already done. Therefore, I have no suggestion for a future Christmas piece. The Coast Guard crew at New Canal do a really good job with the Christmas decorations, though. But, no snow!

Own them all.

1) Old Field Point
2) White Shoals
3) East Quoddy
4) Big Bay
5) Colchester Reef

Akron, Ohio

Braddock Point Light, New York would make an awesome Christmas piece, especially with the full size tower intact.

I did not say which lighthouse I would like for the next Christmas piece, Hereford Inlet Light, N. Wildwood, NJ.

1. it's hard to decide which is my favorite -- tie between
Big Bay and White Shoal
3. Colchester Reef
4. Old Field Point
5. East Quoddy

I would like to see a remake of West Quoddy or Nubble fully decorated for the Christmas piece for 2000

I live in the Florida Keys. Don't think there is a chance of seeing any of our lights covered with snow.

You hope! With the way the weather has been lately you might still be in the running!
