Hello,
We made a brief trip to Split Rock yesterday for the annual lighting to remember the Edmund Fitzgerald. We arrived around 5 pm, later than I'd hoped. The sun had already set, and the lens was lit.
It was a beautiful night. The sky was so clear that we could see lots of stars. This was our 4th year in a row going to Split Rock for this event. For some reason, the crowd was much smaller than previous years. Perhaps it was because it was in the middle of the week.
With no moonlight, it got dark quickly. I only took a few pictures from the shore before it was much too dark to see anything. Most of the photographers had left already.

Once again, we stayed until the light went out. We were watching the stars and talking to another guy who was photographing the light. The three of us were the last to leave, about 40 minutes after the light went out. The temperature had dropped about 20 degrees in 2 1/2 hours, and we got cold walking back to the car.
The photo below was taken after the light went out.
We had packed an overnight bag in case we decided to spend the night. We were hoping to see the northern lights again. Unfortunately we didn't have the opportunity. Although we both had planned to go into work late the next day, we decided to head for home. Until November 10, 2005...
