I have a Toshiba 17 inch laptop that is starting to self destruct.
@ weeks ago I had a 2 inch shadow on the right side over my screen that I could still read through.
Then it became a 2 inch covering the right side of a full screen.
Now it has multi color stripes in the 2 inches and I have 3 additional black inches.
So I'm viewing 12 of the 17 inches.

When I connect to a monitor I have a full screen view.

I'm holding out until Windows 7 is released before buying anything new but I still have a thought that this is fixable. I tried installing updated drivers but no change.

Has anyone taken one of these apart? Is there a ribbon wire that might be damage? Any free resources that anyone can find. I found a new screen for 133 but hesitate to put any money into this project.

I thought I'd throw this out to some of our computer experts.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I have been in the repair end of electronics for 45 years and find that repairing tvs, computers, stereos, etc. is almost not worth the time and trouble since everything is modular nowadays. If you must attempt to repair it yourself, prepare yourself for causing more damage then you already have.

I would recommend calling Toshiba and giving them your model number and serial number and see if thay have a simple fix to your problem. If they can't help you over the phone they should be able to furnish you the address where you can take it to get an estimate for a repair. It may be as simple as a defective IC(integrated circuit) that may be plugged in or soldered in or you may have a defective screen. Don't waste your money buying a screen until you are sure that is the problem. Windows 7 is supposed to hit the market at the end of October. Save your money to apply towards a new computer.

Have you reset the resolution and size of the screen in the display control panel? Any other setting but the current one? No magnetic devices like speakers close to the screen?

Take a photo of the screen and email it to TS at Toshiba.

Here's a lead I found

" I just got my laptop back, fixed (I hope!).

It was a bad display cable, just so you know.

The guy at the repair shop first replaced the screen. But that didn't fix it. He'd tried another display on the pc and the problem didn't happen, that's why he thought it was the screen. But I guess when he tried the other display, with a cable that worked, so that was why it fixed it.

He said he knew right away it wasn't a software problem because my pc booted with the screen narrow.

He kept on saying it was a "very odd" problem. Especially that I kept on fixing the problem temporarily by changing the font size, reinstalling the video driver software, etc.

But I hope it's fixed permanently now. It sounds like it."

That's what the website said!

With the cost of laptops these days, I probably would have just bought a new one. And I wouldn't have been without a computer for as long as some take to fix them. Only a thought ! !

I didn't get it fixed. I just found someone who did.
I had suspected a cable problem.

I'm till muddling through with my problem.

I'm backed up and ready to use my monitor when needed.
Oct 22 is to near! I even have my transfer cable.

ps Changing font size did not help but the reboot gave me some false hope.LOL
