IN MEMORY OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD

The 29 members of the Edmund Fitzgerald crew were remembered with the reading of the names, followed by 30 tollings of a ship's bell... once for each member of the Fitz that was lost and once for all of the sailors who have perished at sea. The 3rd order clamshell lens in the lantern room was then lighted and continued to send it's beam out across the cold dark waters of Lake Superior for several hours in rememberance.

Awesome Picture! Hopefully one of these years we can make it to the ceremonies for the Fitz. We tried to get to Whitefish Point for the 29 years for 29 men rememberance, but didn't work out. I also would like to do the one at Split Rock.
The Fitz is my husband's passion. For our 30th anniversary I bought him a print of the Fitz with the Whitefish Point Light in the background...it was signed by both the artist and Gordon Lightfoot.

Thanks for that link...I didn't know that they changed the number of times the bell will be tolled! Kind of sad that the tradition has ended but, I also understand the reason for the change. Life goes on, I guess.

Photos of the 2 lifeboats that were recovered from the Fitz

You can't put into words what you feel when you see these lifeboats up close. They are large and heavy metal.

You look at them and the damage and it's just a numbing and humbling experience.

Never seen before photos, or at least not at the CF. Now that's a history lesson and an eye opening reminder of the tragedy that cost so many their lives.

Thank you for sharing those pics.

I uploaded more of the Split Rock lighted lens images to my website this morning. The new page can be accessed via the following shortened link:

http://makeashorterlink.com/?D6AF63F3E

If you use the navigation links at the bottom of the page you can go back to a large view of the current home page photo or to a Lake Superior gallery selection page that will let you get to other daylight photos of Split Rock shot from the water in 2005.

I'll be adding additional gallery pages with more daylight photos from my recent trip to Minnesota over the coming weekend.
