Just completed the first painting that will be going to Chicago. "Forgotten Hero" is also the first in the series "Lost but Never Forgotten" depicting lighthouses that no longer exist or may soon dissapear.

This painting shows the long-gone Cleveland Lighthouse as it appeared in 1872. Truly an impressive structure with 2 separate residences and 20 rooms with an 87' octagonal brick tower whose beam could be seen from more than 18 miles away. The station was made obsolete after only 20 years by a far less elaborate breakwater facility. To the regret of many people, the magnificent lighthouse was eventually torn down. 16"x20" Acrylic on Canvas.

Now that's a real beauty, Digger. That light is gone now? What a shame. Losing a treasure like that is a real loss.

Digger,

If we only had 20/20 hindsight these wasteful acts would be eliminated. Has there ever been a situation in our recent history, 1900s, where a community recreated a lighthouse such as this? I mean, we do it with furniture everyday.

Digger,

Awesome! Truly AWESOME!

I have seen the pictures of this lighthouse and as good as they depicted the light, you have brought it to life.

It's an amazing talent you have.

I do have one small question- with all this praise has your hat gotten smaller?

Just a small joke. you desreve all the accolades you have recieved from the other forumites.

Can't wait to see the other 9.

Joe, They are all going to be for sale. They have to be displayed at the Chicago Collectibles Show. If sold prior to that, the owner would have to agree to let me display it there.

Someone better grab this one. Tim Harrison of Lighthouse Digest wants to use "Forgotten Hero" for the cover of an upcoming issue of the Digest. Tim did an article on Cleveland Lighthouse in his book, "Lost Lighthouses" and was so happy that it had been "Rebuilt".

Another beauty - I can't believe the detail of the gables and molding above the windows.

I am sure that tearing this down is now truly regretted.

All the forum members are truly blessed that you are willing to share your talent with us. If we can't afford the real thing, do you as a rule have numbered and signed prints?

This is truly awesome and what a sad, sad thing it is that the light is no more.

Digger,

Great Painting! I love this light. I look forward to the day that HL decides to make it. What a shame that it was torn down.

Colors - especially the reds, greys, and greens remind me of an early American 'primitive' style. What I find really outstanding is your subtle light and shadow. Very nice!

Offhand, I'd say that HL's Mark Sherman has some serious competition here. Another remarkable piece of work, Digger. You've brought to life one of this country's most attractive lighthouses. I strongly second the motion to have signed, limited edition prints made up -- you'd have no trouble marketing your work.

Another beauty, Digger! It's such a shame that we have lost incredible old lights like this. Glad we're working against that now! Keep showing us all these beautiful paintings...it's such a treat!
