Richard,
I hate to tell you, but now one knows if a photograph of the 1803 tower exists. "The Lighthouse Digest" sent out a a reguest about 6 months to a year ago, for a picture of this tower and so far they haven't reported recieving one.
There are some pencil drawings done of the 1854 remodeled tower by a Yankee soider that was stationed on Hatteras, during the Cvil War, but that's the only thing I have ever seen. If I can remember where I saw them, I'll post the URL.

PS Apex, NC? That isn't to far from Eden NC which is where I was raised.

Thanks, I would like to see that drawing.
Your post brings up another question.
If there are no pictures of the lighthouse, how did Lifton (I believe thats the right spelling) come up with the lighthouse they have under "lost Lighthouses"? Are they firing off the hip again?

Richard:
I don't know where you might find the picture referenced on-line, but I have it in a book called "America's Lighthouses - an Illustrated History" by Francis Ross Holland.
Page 113. The Picture legend says it is a photograph (of the drawing) belonging to the the USCG, from the National Archives.

Good Luck!
