Hi All,
Just read with interest, Tim's most recent posting in the Fog Signal building forum.
He said:
"Another piece of HL arcana that came to light - the LLOM series has a variation, albeit an odd one. Owners of these small models will note the name of the series and model is printed or stamped directly on the bottom of each piece. It turns out the ink used on the earliest production runs didn't adhere well and smeared easily. To deal with this, HL covered the bottom of these with a thin clear plastic like covering. Subsequently they changed the ink and the models no longer required the protective covering. So you can tell if you have the earliest original LLOM pieces by the clear cover on the bottom. (Don't remove it - the ink may come off!) "
I think that the clear film is an indication of the second variation. It was HL's first try to fix the problem. The very first sets went out without the film & the dealers were contacted by their reps about the problem. They were told not to place price stickers on the bottom or damage to the labeling may occur when the sticker was removed.
Does anyone else have more information than this?

I have a couple purchased shortly after they came out. They do not have the plastic covering. When I licked the bottom I didn't get any ink on my tongue!

HA! Good one Mombo!!!! I purchased several right after they came out also. One of the LL's does have some of the writing missing from the bottom where the store had put thier price tag and then removed it. Don't you just hate it when that happens? digitalman

You must have a water-based tongue Sue.
I believe those with an Alcohol-based tongue would lift the ink right up. Do not try this after a Chivas, Paul!
