Does anybody have any ideas for the Christmas 1999 lighthouse?

Personally, I would like to see Portland Head, ME in a Winter landscape.

Yo Squid! What an excellent idea! What a great way to get a full-size Portland Head into our collections without dropping big bucks. I second that motion! Vote Portland Head for Christmas piece 1999.

I think it's time HL did a Southern piece for
Christmas.
We get snow down here and we also celebrate
the yule.
Another version of Cape Hatteras maybe? St Auggie?
How about Ponce de Leon?
Yep, I would buy a HL LE Christmas with palm trees on it.

Cape Hatteras is a good one.

How about a new Sanibel Island? I wonder how quickly this one would retire?

I give my vote for Portland Head. This would be a wonderful way to make this great lighthouse available once again to collectors rather than doing a second limited edition issue(especially for those who don't have and can't afford to buy the first edition)

Portland in the snow
With a one horse open sleigh
The keeper shines the beam
To guide ships on their way

The fog bell starts to ring
The sleigh, it picks up speed
Oh what fun it is to dream
Another lighthouse I will need

Nice jingle RFoster.

Squid, you can count on my vote for Portland Head! Although there are a few other ones that I would to see in my collection. It would be nice to have a Cape Hatteras without having to shell out a lot of bones for one.

1> Boston Harbor, MA
2> Assateague, VA
3> Diamond Head, HI
4> Cape Neddick, ME
5> West Quoddy Head, ME
6> St. Auggie, FL
7> Montauk, NY

I hope that eveyybody has a happy New Year. I need another job to support this addiction!

How about Whitefish Bay, MI ? Ok, it would be the third Michigan Christmas piece but I think it would make a great Christmas piece - especialy with the skeleton tower and all.

I think an eight sided Coquille would be a great idea. With lots of driftwood for those late night fires to keep us warm during the winter.

How aboot Caribou Island, eh? Unique structure, red roofs on all buildings, lots of snow. Sounds perfect for a Christmas piece, eh? The island doesn't really have any caribou on it, but there is probably room enough for 8 or 9 reindeer pulling Bill Younger in a sleigh!

I'm with Jakescol on this one.

Maybe by next Christmas they will have made SOME type of decision about the maybe limited edition/maybe GLOW/maybe I said something/ maybe I was only kidding/ Coquille River Lighthouse which was (in case you forgot) maybe going to be released this month before all the maybe's got in the way.

I like the idea of a Christmas Portland Head, and since this was the first lighthouse produced without a lightening rod maybe the Christmas piece could include it.
Another nice Christmas piece would be Southeast Block Island...it is a very beautiful structure!

Okay if they don't do a 8 sided Coquille than I hope that they do a LE that has not been done before. I'm trying to expand my collection by adding new lights, not something that is already in the collection. After they have produced every light in the world then I would vote for a reintroduction.

Caribou Island is in Lake Superior, Canadian side, about 30 miles off the mainland. Longitudinally, it is roughly between Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie on Michigan's upper peninsula, but accross the lake from them. Some suspect that the shoals upon which this light is built were responsible for the wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald.

Being a southern boy, I would like to see a southern lighthouse with the Christmas honor, Sanibel, Key West, St. Augustine. dressed in Christmas decorations. But the traditionalist in me says that Christmas means cold weather, & most of all snow- so maybe it needs to be the Portland Head or Ft Niagara.

I like the idea for a Caribou Island lighthouse. Here is a site where you guys can see a picture of it.

http://www.artosborne.com/lighthouse.html

The appearance of the actual lighthouse structure would similar to Sturgeon Bay, Thomas Point, or Hillsboro Inlet. This lighthouse would have some nice detail.

Being a native Mainer I am still baised to another Portland Head. But if a new lighthouse is a requirement, perhaps the Rockland Breakwater light should be considered. This site has a couple of nice pics. Click on the Rockland Breakwater Light for a second view showing better detail of the lighthouse.

Anybody Else have any ideas?

Try this one on for size. It has a lot of snow and ice much of the year, red roof and a very interesting shape. I have some picture's of my own, but wanted to share Dennis O'Hara's excellent work with you. If you haven't been to his web site yet, you should check it out.

http://www.northernimages.com/snapshot/dlh_lts/wiscpt5.jpg

http://www.northernimages.com/snapshot/dlh_lts/wslgt3.jpg

while you are at it check out the rest of Dennis O'Hara's web site, very excellent images:

http://www.cp.duluth.mn.us/~dohara/snapshot/index.html

by the way that aforementioned lighthouse is Wisconsin Point Lighthouse, just over the border from Duluth MN, same harbor.

I gotta believe Christmas 1999 was decided a long time ago.
How about Christmas 2000.
Check out Nubble Lighthouse, York, Maine on the 1999 Hallmark Calendar December.

Thank you for the web links Engbrady! The Wisconsin Point lighthouse would make a nice subject, particularly with the ice flows.

I agree that the 1999 piece has probably been decided, but it is fun to discuss. John Chidester probably knows someone inside who could confirm if or if not. Anyhow, we can always look forward to 2000.

In reference to Ft. Niagra, the original limited edition is one of my least favorite. I rank it up there with North Head. Perhaps a reissue is needed!

Until tomorrow...have a nice day.

It's nice to see that there is the Demand for remade limited editions. It's nice to know I'm not the only believer that limited editions can be revisited.

Finally I have some company out on this limb, now only if that beaver will just stay in the cage.

What is the definition of limited? I don't believe the word "remade" is any where in the definition. I know it's not in my definition. Out on a limb isn't necessary, when there are still hundreds of great lighthouses to be done yet.

Sorry, Being a short and not so great writer I used the wrong word. As stated at the end of my comments. I ment revisited, not remade.

My definition of revisited - Different, unlike the first one, remolded, changed, edited, as in Portland Head with snow, as in Cheryl Spencer hasn't made one so the door is still open.

It isn't the "made" part that I have a problem with. It is the "re" part. I just don't believe there should be "re-limited".

I can agree with both points of view for a new lighthouse or a reissue of a previously released lighthouse.

It would be nice for other collectors including myself to acquire a new limited edition piece of a retired lighthouse that is only available on the secondary market. Not to mention being a more affordable alternative versus the secondary market.

A reissue would probably increase the demand for the earlier retired editions < 5,500. This could only increase the value of our existing collections.

My opinion is a limited edition reissue would be successful if introduced with a unique or a seasonal theme (i.e., winter, fall, & millennium).

But, I would also like to expand my collection with new lighthouses. I need to save some money for a new curio cabinet.

Decisions, Decisions.

I agree with Paul!!!! What part of RE don't you understand. If we keep asking for re-issue, re-make, re-model, re-due, re-design, re-construct, re-season, re-format, or what word you would like to add RE to, then it all becomes re-dundant and your collection will be RE-fuse,
HARBOUR lIGHTS got their start with LIMITED EDITIONS, and since all things re-vert back to football, when you can't even run off-tackle, get back to the basics.

I don't see how a re-issue can increase the value of existing LE's. See the discussion of GLOW's elsewhere on this forum. I would hate to pay big bucks for a piece on the secondary market then have it re-issued with an extra snowflake on the roof. The way to make sure your collection maintains it's value is to make sure Limited means LIMITED.
Besides, there are a lot of lighthouses out there that HL hasn't done yet. There is no need to revisit the same ones over and over. I would rather have one version of a lot of lighthouses rather than several full size versions of a few. (The ornaments and spyglasses don't count.)

I am still against the limited edition reissues/ remakes. Quoting from myself (why not) from an earlier forum thread discussing this concept...

..."The practically unlimited potential for new creative ideas seems to overshadow the approach of just remolding an existing light for the sole purpose of adding snow to it or re-kindling interest through a new limited version. It seems a little boring to me as a new idea, somewhat of a cop-out. HL can do much better."

I'm starting to "bend." From listening to a lot of people, I begining to think maybe they shouldn't make a Coquille GLOW. Those who say there are so many other lights that haven't been made that are more attractive (and very deserving) than Coquille are correct. Yet again, Coquille would benefit from the sales and that is important too.

I guess Coquille is caught between a log and a hard place. Sean, turn the beaver loose to check that log...

It's not a matter of understanding on my part. Its a matter of a simple two sided discussion. One group feels that a lighthouse like Hatteras and Portland can be molded again and the other group does not agree. All our collections could be worth pennies 20 years from now. As far as re-somethings?? You Already have one. Rose Island!!! I haven't seen any Reunion Pieces being discarded at the Flea Markets over it.

I agree with Bob that the money from a Coquille GLOW would be important for preservation. I also agree that there are a lot of lighthouses yet to be sculpted. Sculpted as Limited Editions not as GLOWS. So go ahead and bend Bob, just don't break. Make the Coquille GLOW and throw in a Winter Portland Head GLOW as well. Everybody will be happy, Right?????

Hey Tim,

Is that Walleye sandwich a salad of filet? Do you use mayo, miricle whip, or mustard?
I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. Does it come with a side of honey-mustard smelts?

Lightly fried Walleye fillet on a decent sized toasted bun. A little tartar sauce. Salad? It might have had a piece of lettuce, but remember, this is Minnesota. Little non-descript place near the water - think it was called The Bluewater Cafe. Locals hanging out drinking coffee.

The coast road along Superior from Duluth up to Thunder Bay is a magnificent drive in the Fall. (Get out your maps people and look). Not many lights - Duluth, Split Rock & Two Harbors are the big LH attractions - but a fun trip. Thunder Bay is a funky town - makes you realize much of Canada is still a frontier, eh.

Maybe I should do lighthouse-hunting restaurant guide. Think it'd sell?

Wow...could not believe all of the replies as I have been on the road for the past week. Now I see light in the distance.

Rose Island will reveal the true result of having two issues of the same lighthouse.

Anyhow I am just as happy to add a new lighthouse to my collection. I'll start a new thread under HL Wishes.

Back to my original question. What NEW lighthouses would you guys like to see made?

So far I have four...Caribou Island, Rockland Breakwater, Whitefish Bay, & Wisconsin Point.

Tired & grouchy after a long day at work.

Steve

Please add Fort Gratiot Light in Port Huron, Michigan to the list of new lights. Both JC and I would like to have that one.

Hmmm...lets take a look a Ship John Shoals. Here is a web with a nice picture & story.

I was not able to find any other pictures of this lighthouse on the web!

Yeah Tim, you guys convinced me that a new introduction is the way to go!

I'd like to see HL make more lights from Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Oswego in the winter is like Xmas, LOTS of snow!

From the Outer Banks south you do not see snow at all. I've never heard of it at least. Assateague, Drum Point, Cape Henry and Bodie Island have had snow. We need snow for a Christmas piece. Any of the above would get my vote.

East Quoddy Head is the perfect choice for a Christmas piece! It has the right colors, design (the big red cross), and winter setting. Plus, it is the most dramatic of the 30+ lighthouses we visited on our post-reunion lighthouse tour last October.

Another vote for the timeless Portland Head Lighthouse for the Christmas 1999 Piece.

I thought the original question was what piece would we like to see for Christmas 1999 or (as some have sugested 2000). My vote goes to Rockland Breakwater.

I'll second Rockland Breakwater! It should be done as a HL. I'd also like to see HL make a donation for the lighthouse restoration, similar to that done for Nubble Light.

The 1999 Christmas piece has been selected already. We'll be having a 'Guess Which One' contest in the late Spring. It will be unveiled at the Rosemont show in June.

Now if you want to suggest the lighthouse to use for Christmas '00, start another thread.
