I scrapped my original idea and started a new design for "Gulf Lights". I set up an index page and I was wondering if you could post your comments. http://www.gulf-lights.com

Looks pretty good! Only issue I'm getting right now...in Firefox 1.5.0.7, the search box is overlapping the first link. It might be a non-IE incompatability thing (never mind that Firefox is a far superior browser to IE)...or it might be the same problem in IE, too. Anyway, might want to check the code on that.
Otherwise...looks pretty good! Can't wait to see the final copy!

I also noticed the search box overlap. I also feel the color gray is somewhat drab, so to speak. I would try to make the first page more exciting and add something that will jump right out at whoever links up.
 Bob

I've raised the search box a bit, if it still overlaps please post a screenshot so I can see how much more it needs to go. As for color, I'm working on extending the picture of the Key West lighthouse to include the "Updates" section but it's a bit tricky because of the way I took the picture.

I would get rid of the gray background and go with a sky blue or something alittle less harsh. Also, I would change the text color to something other than black...maybe dark blue.
It reminds me of a rainy day...
But it is shaping up nicely...great start.

Search box is fine ATT. However, I do have to agree with the comments about the gray. Just don't like it, too stark for an upbeat page. The Key West pic is very interesting. FWIW, you can also see the image outline for the 'Gulf Lights" header at the top of the page.

Instead of changing the grey, do you think adding a textured background would help?

Very nice, but I have to agree with the others. Too stark. Definitely needs some color.

Zachary, if you are set on gray, I think you need to go to a much, much lighter shade of gray. Maybe a 10 - 20% screen at most.

I tried lighter grey and it just didn't look right. The contrast between the photograph of Key west and the light grey was way off and it just looked bad. I'll mess around with some various options and see what happens.

I love the picture of Key West Lighthouse. The reef light image at the top should be darker, so it stands out.
