Thanks Torchbearer, but the wingdings are only a diversion ... the real secret code is in how the show the angle brackets without hiding the code from view. This puzzle was posed by JTimothyA some time ago. I just now got around to solving the mystery.

Actually Tim, I never even looked at your code. I used

in my first posting to avoid using the
tag at the end of each line. In retrospect, I guess that I didn't even need to use it there -- a hard return in these Fora works just as well and without coding. I guess that I was in the mode when I did that.

Anyway, it appears that I also got carried away with my code cut'n'paste in the second post.

The moral of the story: Kids, if you try this at home, don't waste your time with

 tags -- they're unnecessary.

Obviously.

I was simply urging you on 'solve the mystery' as you put it and to find out how to include visible angle brackets in HTML examples without using the PRE tag.

And for any folks who want to learn HTML, try to learn version 4.0 and consider using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). It will better prepare you to begin using XML - which is where the Web is going or in some cases has already gone.

Then someday you can tell your kids 'when I was your age I had to do that by hand with HTML'. :-)
