Uploading Files for LighthouseKeepers.com - 08/15/02 04:42 AM

We're ready to open up the ability to upload files for use on these Collector Forums.

You can upload files through your browser. At the upload page, you will see a space for your name, your email address and room for up to 5 files to upload at a time.

The files will be uploaded into a folder with your email address as its name. Be sure to be consistent in how you capitalize your email address. This will insure that uploads you make in later sessions will go in the same folder.

This service is provided ONLY for registered members of the Collector Forums. Please don't post images for others or for use elsewhere on the Internet.

Here are few notes:

1. You MUST remember the names of your files. There is no way to view which files you've uploaded or not.

2. You cannot delete files.

3. Only image files can be uploaded. This includes files with extensions of TIF, TIFF, JPG, JPEG, GIF and PDF.

3a. Go to the following page to get the form to upload your images..

http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/uploads/

4. The file names cannot include spaces or slashes. Keeping your file names short will help. And name your files desciptively - "hilton_head.jpg" rather than "DSC4578.jpg".

5. Image files MAY be deleted after 90 days. If you have an image you want to remain longer (such as an avatar or signature photo), begin the file name with "perm_" and we'll leave it alone.

6. Files sizes for each image must be less than 1MB and the image size must be smaller than 600x600 pixels.

Once you upload files, the URL of your images will start with:

http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/uploads/files/

followed by your complete email address, a slash, then the complete file name.

If I uploaded "hilton_head.jpg" then the URL for the image would be:

http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/uploads/files/webmaster@lighthousekeepers.com/h ilton_head.jpg

After uploading you will receive an email confirming -- however it does not include the file name(s).

Finally, Dave Hannum has offered to be the "Uploads Wrangler" and take on the duties of answering questions, helping uploaders to figure out which images they've uploaded, etc. For purposes of these services, you can email him at Bubba@LighthouseKeepers.com. He promises to try to get back to all inquiries within 24 hours. Dave receives an email like yours, except that it DOES include your email address and the name(s) of the file(s) you uploaded.

Click on the link below to give it a try.

Other things to keep in mind when you upload to lighthousekeepers.com:

PLEASE resize your images as John has requested. Max length in either direction should be 500 pixels, and this is pushing it.

Compress your jpegs - many programs allow choice of how compressed.

If you are scanning an image to post, scan it at 75 dpi MAX - anything more is wasted since your monitor displays at 72dpi.

Getting images the correct size is important for a couple of reasons:

If you exceed the size limit you force someone to have to scroll sideways in addition to up and down to have to view your image.

If you fail to compress your images and load up a thread it can be very, very slow loading for those with dial-up connections. If I run across a thread that is loading that slowly, I back out and move on.

The forums are designed to share with others, and I hope that you will do so thoughtfully. There are many great pictures here in the forums and we all enjoy them. All I ask is that you do your share to be a responsible picture poster.

Dave,

You might want to go and edit the very first post in this thread.

It states that you can have files 600x600 pixels and a bit later you say 500x500 is pushing it.

It would help some to have agreement on the size.

Dennis,

600 x 600 is the max (and that first post was by John). I suggest 500 on the max, because it seems to fit better - shouldn't have to scroll.

Dennis,

Just a little shortcut that I accidently came upon one day not too long ago. All you need to do when you wish to upload pictures is to go to the forum address at the right top of your screen and type uploads at the end of the existing address. Works fine for me. Will look like this when done:
