Updated page headline - 01/01/07 11:06 PM

While I truly enjoy Tammy's great shot of Split Rock in the snow (gee, who wouldn't?) I do not care at all for the mega downsized version used to indicate updated threads. Way too hard to (a) appreciate the image in any way, or even really know what it is and (b) incredibly hard to rapidly see what is a thread with a new post in it. IMO going to have to find a better way to differentiate between new and nothing new.

Re: Updated page headline - 01/02/07 12:22 AM

Sorry, but while the current as this is written variation with the solid red (or whatever specific color it is) and the bright light make it very easy to differentiate new from the rest, it is, IMO, a very obnoxious color display. Just way too blatant or overpowering.

AGREE.

I agree with Dave on this!

Burgundy color too intense. Can you pick up the tan color of the buildings as the background and place a smaller light on it to indicate a new posting? Think that might be an improvement.

Third try. Anything else, you'll have to submit your ideas as jpg files to size and I'll decide whether I like 'em or not. wink

Re: Updated page headline - 01/02/07 03:19 AM

The red at least showed up. The tan does not show up very well.

Proving, one again, that you can't please all of the people all of the time, I liked the red better. But that said John, It looks great. Thanks.

Re: Updated page headline - 01/02/07 05:03 AM

John, another opinion!!! I love the banner picture by Tammy and think that should stay. Why don't you have another picture for the updated threads that works and just use that all the time instead of trying to make the banner pictures work with the updated threads. Does that make any sense?? You could probably use one of the avatar pictures you already have available. Why does the banner picture have to match with the updated threads. confused It takes away from the great pictures downsizing them like that.

Re: Updated page headline - 01/02/07 05:12 AM

That could be an option...just have one set of icons that we always use. Maybe make up a few options and have a vote on them so that we avoid the arguments. Or ask people what they want in indicators.

It seems that recently, every photo indicator has only led to arguments about "doing justice" to the image. Really, you just can't do justice to an image in a .5"x1" rectangle, especially if it's such a stunning image as Tammy's this month.

If we have something constant, then we avoid this conflict. I've never seen arguments about the headers, but seemingly always about the indicators.

Maybe even create some kind of clip-arty "logo" thing and change one colour for each new photo - i.e. for this photo, one of the colours would be changed to be a dark and light tan; another one could maybe be shades of red.

This might solve this issue once and for all...just an idea.

Re: Updated page headline - 01/02/07 07:41 AM

I agree...a great picture by Tammy but the tan is hard to tell the difference for new posts.

I like the idea of having set icons for the post indicators that are different from the banner picture.

Re: Updated page headline - 01/02/07 01:59 PM

I like Tammy's picture and it was definitely the best of the group. The current new/old post indicator could serve the purpose but it's no more than a blur rather than a distinctive icon indicating what is new an unread.

Can a crop of the Lantern Room or the foghorns be used to indicate new posts and leave the colored blur for the old posts?

cool Bob cool

Tan color shows up nicely on my office computer, as does the new post indicator. It does not show clearly on my laptop monitor. Like the idea of finding and keeping one that works and just changing the banner picture.

Jim, I'll give you extra credit for being the only one who did what I asked. Still to me they looked too much alike in that small size.

Meantime, I've settled on something simple.

Now don't you make me stop this car! anger

I like the check mark!!! It's simple, grabs your eye and stands out with the color you've chosen. Excellent choice of whomever came up with the idea.

Re: Updated page headline - 01/03/07 03:06 AM

I LOVE IT!

It looks GREAT!

Nice, simple, to the point...yet bold. And very easy to find the new threads.

IMO, these can stay and it'd be okay.

Plus, it reflects the love we have for collecting lighthouses and HLs. Okay, maybe that's a stretch...maybe I've had a little too much lit class?

Re: Updated page headline - 01/03/07 05:11 AM

Much, much better than the pale colour used earlier today.
certainly easier for these old eyes.
Thanks John.

Re: Updated page headline - 01/04/07 01:45 AM

Not fond of the checkmark or the color. Looks a little to institutional. But as only one negative out of many........

Re: Updated page headline - 01/04/07 02:05 AM

Well I like the check-mark. So much easier for eyes being disabled by cataracts, and a small monitor to boot.

Re: Updated page headline - 01/05/07 05:01 AM

I like the checkmarks, though I don't always pay attention to the new posts. I usually check for active topics.

By the way, thanks to those who voted for my image. Were the results posted somewhere? I didn't vote only because I submitted an image. There were a couple others I thought were great, and I'm wondering how they did.

Re: Updated page headline - 01/05/07 06:25 AM

Tammy, the initial voting results are displayed at the top of the page . . . . . I imagine we will see Castle Hill next month followed by Round Island in March. (You can go to the poll thread and display the results.)
