Feeling disconnected....

Being one of the unfortunate who could not attend this years Reunion, I must say I'm feeling a little "disconnected" from the whole thing. I look at reunion coverage from the past and there are piles of pictures and descriptions of what went on each day. This time? Nothing. Could someone who was on the cruise post some pictures of the events that went on, the dinners, auctions, pics of Bill and Nancy? I know there has to be some out there for us non-attendees and non Facebook crowd...

I posted some lighthouse photos from the Reunion down in the Picture Gallery. I don't know if you spotted them or not.

As for pictures of the attendees and activities, I left those to the everpresent and much more talented Mr. Brady. The only shot I'm pretty sure he didn't get is this one:

Like Mike I was unable to attend the Reunion Cruise! I followed Paul;s posts crossing the country and was excited by what I expected to come but have seen only a few posts' from the HL CRUISERS!
Fortunately NELLS Ron Foster posted 4 albums of photos on his Kodak site! I just finished them and like Paul's reports it was ALMOST like being there. and Ron and Paul and a BIG THANK YOU to you both for taking those of us who couldn't attend along!

I think the reason you havnt seen many posts yet is because like me I am still going through them. Almost finished and will hope to have time next week to post some. Rich keeps yelling at me that I should get my head out of the computer, so it is taking longer for me. I will post.

I posted mine on my Facebook and if you want to see them I would be glad to send you a link if you send me a request. It is so much easier to post there. It was a great trip.

These Forums were started by, and because of people specifically interested in lighthouses and lighthousing. We are a comparatively small group beside the masses on Facebook. I would love to see pictures from any attendee's adventure, but I WILL NOT BECOME ONE OF A BILLION OF ANYTHING TO DO IT!!!!! This is where to find people who know about, and want to hear, and see more about your trip, but are not necessarily interested in the grandchildren. This Cruise was, after all, organized by Harbour lights as a reunion of HARBOUR LIGHTS COLLECTORS, most of whom look in on THIS SITE for all things lighthouse. Anyone can post pictures anywhere they like, but for your cruise pictures, this is where the most appreciative people will be found.

Maybe you misunderstood my post, I did not suggest that you need to join Facebook just to see my photos I can send a link to them and you don't have to join to view them.

Amen to that! I won't go to Facebook either for many reason that some might think absurd.

Ruthie was just extending an easier way to share her photos with those that did not go on the cruise.

You probably have your security set so that only your friends can see your images, which is how I have mine set I do believe..

I have just finished a book on Shutterfly. You do not have to buy anything to look but I would need your email to send you a link. I did put it on facebook if you want to look there. I understand if you are not the type to go to facebook, I go on there maybe once in a blue moon myself. There was so many pictures it would take forever to post. I would love to share with anyon who is interested. Ruthie- I will check facebook later.

I can't see any of these photos. The other link still works fine - and allows me to view 12 other albums but no Reunion Cruise photos.

Strange- very strange. Facebook is usually either all in or all out on things like this.

Well, so am I. Feeling disconnected. But, I think for the most part the feeling is self-inflicted.

It seems that the HL community has migrated, again. Years ago, when the Internet was a baby, Harbour Lights collectors began to find each other through the AOL chat rooms. Great fun, lots of good conversation.

Then, as the Internet became a precocious teenager, groups set out on their own, with dedicated web sites and chat rooms that had grown up into Forums, like this one. The advantage was (is?) that the Fora are here all the time. Stop by when you like, read, post, see what's happening.

My thanks to the many folks (John in particular, who got things rolling) who put so much time into making these Fora something that provided so much to so many Harbour Lights collectors. It's been a great source of camaraderie and information for many years.

Now, the Internet is in maybe middle age, and there are more ways to get together and share interests. Like Facebook, which is where I suspect the HL collector community has migrated to.

Oh, folks still go 'home' again, to see what's happening. But the real action is over at the new house. And that's okay. Life goes on and there's nothing stopping me (or anyone else) from knocking on the door at the new hot spot in town and asking to come in.

After all, we hear lots of good things about the new place. Lots of things happening there. Lots of things to do. But it's hard to just 'stop by' and see what all those things are. You have to have a key. No lurking allowed. And I hear that it's a lot like the Hotel California, check in any time you like, but you can never leave. At least, not without leaving some of your 'things' behind. Like who you converse with, what doors you peek behind, when you come and go, etc.

Not that things like that cannot be garnered from the Forum software. But I don't sense a profit motivation for that sort of information here on the forums. But I'm pretty sure that is what drives FB. Connect the dots, and sell the trail.

So, I understand and appreciate that the community we've all known has morphed again. Off to Facebook. And maybe someday I'll apply for a FB key. But for a pretty private person, that 'never leave' part is tough to get past.

Probably I'm just being an old fuddy-duddy. But while I'm stewing on it, ya'll have a great time over there and don't forget to visit the old stomping grounds once in a while. Post something so we know you were here.

Your not alone Rick. I feel the same way and wonder why we are still paying for the server when hardly anyone ever visits the old homestead.

I don't think Facebook is as easy to keep 'private' as users think it is, or that only people who actually ARE who they SAY they are, ask to be your "Friends". How can one tell in these days?

I think too much is being made about Facebook. It's been a great source for great lighthouse stories and pictures. Just be very limited with what info you post and don't go "Friends" happy. Do your homework.

But I still like these Forums are the best. Nothing else comes close !!!

Ditto to all said above. Give me the Forums any day...

Thanks, Ruthie, for great WA photos. I couldn't get into the FB sites. I also agree about FB. Most of the time I wish I hadn't joined. I still like the forum because I can communicate with my LH friends.
