Nikon coolscan

I just ordered the Nikon coolscan V. Does anyone have one and could give me advice before mine shows up. I could use all the tips you can think of.

I guess nobody has it. I just got it this weekend and started. It cant be any easier than plug and scan so far I tried one strip (have comoany) and it is doing a nice job. It will take a couple of months than I will do what everyone else does. Sell on Ebay.

Wish that I could help. But unfortunately, I don't even know what a Nikon coolscan V is. I assume that it is some type of camera or a motorcycle. I know, I'm no help whatsoever. Sorry.

Bob, it is a scanner. I am guessing Fran has decided to convert her film/slide negatives to electronic form.

What I am trying to figure out is the co-moaning part.........., but it is doing a nice job. (warped mind working here..........) Betting she actually has company, but that would mean she has to be home for at least a little bit.....

Yes Dave you are correct I had company. I was in a rush when I posted. Now i am working full time UGH and have no time or energy for anything. Lost my inner work clock and cant get up in the morning.
I have been scanning my old negatives and have to say they are comming out great. Once I finish this gem is going on Ebay like everyone else who buys it, uses it and is finished with it. It will take many months its not the fastest and I have a ton of old family negs. Not to mention all the lighthouse negs. I come home from work and do about 2 rolls of old negs a night. The digital ice is really great. It takes out all the dust and scratches. I tried without ice and with ice what a difference.

I had no idea how many negs I had. I am still doing them. With the digital ice it takes 10 min for a strip of 4. The file is 10 times the size of my 10 megapixel camera at raw. I had to buy another Western Digital My book at 500 GB just for the pictures. My computer was full really fast. I hope I have enough room. It dosnt end I keep finding Boxs of negatives. Looking foward to the end. The pictures look good and I have had tears seeing my kids as babies and people who are no longer with us.

That's the good and bad in a nutshell, Fran. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet soon since the GOOD is to good not to put in the time as I learned with my digitzing my Sound 8 mm.

I was scanning the negatives at the scanners default settings. I have now changed to JPG because the size was so large (69,000KB) and really uneccesary. It is now coming out as 9,000KB which is larger than the RAW that comes out of my camera. I dont plane on making enlargements that need the large files. It still is taking 10 min. per strip of 4.

Have you done slides Fran?
Which model is it?
Please rate quality? looks excellent so far?
Speed is very slow?
How far along are you on your project?

I have not done slides yet. I have 28 years of film of the kids and 5 years of before kids pictures. thats a lot of film. I also have books filled with lighthouse film to be scanned. It is the Nikon V and was over $500. So far The digital Ice has taken all the scratches and dust off. I have not tried to have one printed yet but on the computer looks great. The speed is not great but compared to other scanners I read thats how it is unless you spend more money. The flatbeds may be different I am not sure. Maybe someone here can give more info on others.
I will send one to be processed at costco and let you know this weekend.

I am almost finished with film of family next is the lighthouses. I scan before I go to work and when I get home. Then on the weekends I spend a lot of time scanning. Glad the weather is bad.

As soon as I finish the film then I have to switch the loader that came with it and check it out. Let me know when you are ready to get one and I will try it.

I'm getting real close Fran. I discovered the differences between the 4000, V, 5000, and 9000.
Leaning toward the 5000 right now. I'm surprised to see that this 3rd generation scanner has not been updated in quite some time.

My guess is that since film is slowly but surely disappearing so is the market for film scanners. With less of a market there will probably be less improvement to follow. It seems flatbed scanners are more popular now. That is probably thanks to large format film still being produced. I still have a panoramic camera that I shoot slide film in. I have a scanner for that format. I suspect that it is the last film scanner I will ever own.

I agree. I am more than 1/2 way through and my husband is ready for a divorce. Once I am done I wont need it so ebay here I come. I think it was worth the effort on my part. It also gave me the chance to go through memory after memory of my babies that I havnt seen in a loooooooooong time.
Not to mention all the lighthouses I have on film. I started with family negatives and now working my way through the lighthouses. I never reallized how many I have seen. Going to have to make a list one day.

I just finished scanning all my negatives. What a job. It takes a long time but they came out really nice. I also saw some family pictures I forgot about. It was scan, wipe eyes, scan. Slides and negatives came out great. I bought a special piece to scan single negatives and also some wierd old size film that wont go into the machine, it work good also. If you are thinking about doing it , Just do it. I cant believe how much stuff I am getting to throw out. Some of my dads slides I couldnt do because of mould from water damage. I am happy I did this.
