Lighthouses in Films ... - 12/24/07 07:50 PM

Well, it is Christmas and all the old films are on TV ... and I never knew...
The Needles Lighthouse - bevore they built the helicopter platform - is shown in "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" ...

I did not know that either, but it has been a long, long time since I saw it.

Then there's the scene from "Forrest Gump" where he's running from coast to coast. He runs east and turns around at Marshall Point Lighthouse, then runs to the west coast.

I saw a lighthouse in a Campbell Soup ad on TV.
It was on and off the screen so fast if you blinked you would probably miss it!

I always wondered about the lighthouse in the movie Pete's Dragon. After watching it last week with my granddaughter it explained in the dvd extras that it was a faux light built in California and needed Coast Guard approval to place the lens in the tower for the filming.

The soup ad is Yaquina Head with "soup can coloring" added. The Fresnel lens shows up in another version.

We enjoyed seeing the Point Judith Lighthouse in the movie 'Dan in Real Life' staring Steve Carell. This was not just a fleeting glimpse of the lighthouse, but several minutes of the movie were spent at Point Judith as Steve Carell tried to explain to nieces and nephews how a lighthouse operates which turned into a very humorous scene.

I will have to see "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" again. I have not seen "Dan In Real Life" and will have to catch it. We had a thread on Lighthouses in Movies about a year ago; we posted tons of movies and tv programs on that. (Just in case someone wants to review the list.)

Has anybody else seen the promos for the remake of 10 Little Indians called "Harper's Island" that will be on CBS starting in April?

The LH in the logo looks to me to be Point Atkinson outside of Vancouver, BC.

I can't confirm it but I did confirm that the filming location was in and near Vancouver, BC.

I don't intend to watch the show just like the logo.

Have seen the promos ("lighthouse, lighthouse!" reverberates through our TV room whenever one is seen on screen [cabin fever big time lately!]) but didn't know it was a remake of 10 Little Indians. Good eye Paul--I thought it was a faux light built for the show.

Your last statement has piqued my curiosity--can you share why you don't intend to watch the show?

Well, first unless I'm mising something you are asking me- Dennis- the questions not Paul.

It's not listed as a remake of Ten little Indians but it's obvious that the storyline promoted is inspired at least in part by it.

I'm not 100% sure of my ID- which is why I asked so I could get confirmation, possibly.

Lastly- i don't intend to watch the show because the subject matter does not interest me in any way. I'm not going to watch something to possibly get a glimpse of a lighthouse now and again.

If there's one of the forum viewers out there with a little time on their hands who also has a burning interest in lighthouses in movies then I have a challenge to offer up. Several years ago (try 8 or 9) I spent a little time assimilating a list of lighthouses seen in movies and on tv that would benefit from a little updating. I don't know how much space I can take here but I'll attempt to list what I had at that time. There have been a lot of movies released since this list was put together and it might be interesting to have members add to this list. There are also a lot of question marks where the exact lighthouse shown in the movie or tv show hadn't been identified. All it takes is someone with the interest and time to act as librarian. Here goes:

Gary, Pretty impressive list. If I get some time I'll add a few recent ones. Right now I'm just glad to be working again.

By the way, did anybody watch last Fridays episode of the Sarah Conner Chronicles?
Several scenes took place in Point Vicente Keepers house.
Doubt they were actually filmed there, but there were some great views of the lighthouse.

The Lighthouse, 1997 is Bishops's Rock Lighthouse

http://dockyardventurers.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/bishop_rock.jpg?w=322&h=519

Wouldn't you like to be stranded at the top during a storm?

I'm weird, I know. I would also like to ride out a category 3 or 4 hurricane in the Oak Island Lighthouse.

Thanks, Gary, for a great list. There was a Hallmark movie called "The Blackwater Lightship" in 2004 but I think the lighthouse was digitally created and I don't remember a lightship!

Look for updates on a new movie "The Lightkeepers" at the following web site:

http://www.thelightkeepersmovie.com

Looks like Richard Dreyfuss will be the lighthouse keeper. Movie promo on their web site shows Highland Light, but most of the filming will actually be at Race Point Lighthouse

We were watching The History Channel a couple of days ago and one of the boundary stones of the original District of Columbia was shown on-site in the seawall just south of Jones Point, VA Lighthouse. Lighthouse Friends description of Jones Point Light indicates it was installed by George Washington. A marker designating the boundary between Maryland/Virginia is located north of the lighthouse.

This link gets you to pictures and some of the historical information:

Men in Black II was on last night. Agent J had 'retired' at the end of MIB and in II was shown as the 'postmaster' at Truro MA. He needed to be 'deneuralized' and called back into service.

The exteriors of the Post Office were shot at Fire Island NY. (And all the postal workers, as it turned out, were aliens.)
