HL Fourth Order Fresnel Lens Lamp - 08/25/06 06:54 AM

I saw this lamp made by Harbour Lights Home in the latest LHD Catalog. Has anybody seen one up close or purchased one? What do you think? It's sparked my interest but I'm waiting to here some reviews before I shell out the $250 for it.

Is Harbour Lights & Harbour Lights Home one in the same companies?

Thanks in advance,

Sean

I saw the lamp at St. Augustine when they presented one to Bill. It looks very well made and quite interesting but the price makes it something that I can do without. The money will buy 3-4 limited editions for my collection.

I saw it too in person. I love it and
I am also thinking of purchasing one.
I did not get up close to check out the quality but the Fresnel lens is an actual limited edition of the Hereford Inlet's Fourth Order Fresnel Lens.
The base is a solid hardwood stained maple. I would assume that the shaft supporting the light bulb is brass plated steel, which is standard with lamps. The premium of course would be solid brass, which I doubt.
I also agree with Rich it is extremely expensive, but I think it would be a great present for the wife.

I wonder if this is going to be the only fresnel lens that will be used. I hate to buy it and later they come out with one I like better.

I also was wondering if they were numbered.
That would be kinda neat.

Sean, I believe that Harbour Lights Home is a new line of offerings under the HL name. I believe the new tableware also is Harbour Lights Home.

Harbour Lights Home is a branch of Harbour Lights. When Lighthouse Marketing purchased Harbour Lights from Younger and Associates, their intention was to expand the Harbour Lights name into other areas, such as home decor.

We were not expecting to receive the lamp until October, but received our floor sample 3 days ago, so we're assuming it is now available for customers to purchase. It is made by Boston Lighting, a company that also made table lamps out of the Lefton Illuminated lighthouses, and the Harbour Lights "Guardians."

Like all products from Boston Lighting, it is a very well-made lamp. Considering that it costs you $154 to purchase the Hereford Lens by itself, the lamp price of $250 is not really that expensive.

It has a 3-way switch at the base of the lamp bulb socket. You can have the lens on, the lamp shade on, or both. The bulb (and socket) in the lens has been enlarged, to give off more light. The lens does lift off its base, so you would want this in a place where it doesn't get bumped. Might be a reason they wouldn't do a lamp with the tall, thin Boston lens.

Since the base of the lens is permanently attached to the base of the lamp, it is impossible to tell if it is a numbered piece (edition size was 4,000). Each does come with the normal Hereford Lens authenticity paperwork (and tent card) from Harbour Lights.

I would suspect that the lenses used for the lamps would not be counted as part of the 4,000 edition size. It will be interesting to see if other lamps with other HL lenses are offered for sale in the future.

Thanks for the info, Jim.

Bob M - I'll check on that, but I'm 99.99% certain those DO count as part of the production run.

Great information, thanks! I don't believe I have the Hereford Lens yet. This might be the way to solve two problems, fill the gap and fine another location to display the lens.

While some of us are looking at a $129 lens, (most expensive HL except for Navesink?) and seeing a $275 price for the combo.

Have you been to a furniture or lamp store lately looking at table lamps? There may be $29 versions, but there are designer lights that cost way more than $275. If you've been shopping at Wal-Mart or Target for a table lamp, you're not looking at comparable products.

I've not seen this lamp in person and it wouldn't fit the decor of my home, but for the person with a beach, lake or home near any water who wants to create this kind of theme, it's a moderately priced product. IMHO, of course.

Now let's talk about what may be the very first "Harbour Lights Home" product:

See it even says "Harbour Lights" on the bottom:

Not nearly as nice a design as the one Harry did for the new dinnerware line.

Comparing apples and oranges, Mr. C.? This is a very funky cup with great colors. Harry's dishes are lovely and much more "refined". :p
