Just picked up this piece from my dealer. It is very well done, but smaller than I would of liked to have had it.

I picked up mine yesterday. Agree, great looking piece, but would have liked it a little bigger. Could have included a little more of the shoal its on. Still an exceptional piece.

I agree it is very well done, but a little smaller and lighter. This means that more will fit into the curio cabinet! This seems to be true for the last four pieces released.

It's true of the past couple of years.. They are trying to hold the price of the lighthouses and the price of the materials to produced them have skyrocketed in China, so they are a little smaller sculptures.

I agree that the current size really helps in allow for more to fit in the cabinets, while I love some of the larger early pieces, their footprints just eat up cabinet space. The detail in the recent releases more than mkes up for the smaller size.

These two images were taken on a trip to Buffalo, NY to view lighthouses a couple of years ago. These can be compared to Paul's photo link above.





I thought that in my visits to lighthouses, the fog horn was quite different and Harry did a great job of capturing it for the collectors.

Bob, is the fog horn that huge extension coming out of the roof of the building beside the tower?!

This is from the other side of the HL369 lighthouse.. You can see the fog horn shape from this side..

That is the real fog horn bell coming out of the building. Unfortunately, the captain of the boat could not get on the other side of the lighthouse for a photo. There was no water there! Has anyone else ever seen a bell for a fog horn that big on top of what would be a "one-car garage" size building? Remember that this was one of the waterways off of Lake Erie. The sound would be helpful for boats on the Lake Erie trying to find Buffalo in the fog to deliever their gain from the midwest to General Mills so they could make breakfast cereal.

Facing onshore, it must have been a nightmare for anyone living within a few miles of it!

Am I wrong or does the real lighthouse have just a single door. The model has a double? Or did it originaly have a double door?

You will see that it's the angle of Bob's images that make it appear to be just a single door by an image at this website, while it is a double door..

Also in the historical image you can see that the light is on the end of a breakwater at the entrance to a harbor, horn pointed out towards the lake. There is some good information on this page also..

Nice discussion about the Buffalo piece here in the Harbor of Refuge thread!

Since cost has come up, I had some thoughts (happens occasionally).

Many blame the GLOW's for putting a dent in the LE market, but I think it's the LLOM's. Many are seeing 4" to 5" LE's selling for around $70 when 3" to 3.5" LLOM's are selling for abour $20 to $25. Which one is giving you a better bang for your buck?

Many of the new LLOM's are made in limited quanity's, so how is the cost to produce issue justified?

As for their footprint, what attracted me to the Harbour Lights is the 6" to 8" size replicas they produced. While a few(Hillsboro, Monomoy Point to name a couple) are a little big, most pieces were a just right size.

I question the cost excuse, when you compare the price of LE's versus Limited LLOM's.

Now back to our Buffalo South Entrance discussion.

You left out "the price of the materials" such as the oil based resin that is used.. Weight!! I will try and put together some comparison weights down the road.. I have some old figures that I will update. The size is not only a height and a base measurement but also a cubic inch thing. 3 X 3 is 9 and 5 X 5 is 25.. There are other material factors that go into cost to produce..

The price of little lights has gone up on average about 25% over the past 3 or 4 years, if you raise the cost of a limited edition of $70 (using your figure) by 25%, it would now cost $87.50..

Right now I can't even get to a lot of my lighthouses since we are totally redoing our bedroom, bedroom closets and both bathrooms and our great room is filled with clothes racks etc.. Plus I need to get a new power supply cord for my postal scale (1 of 4 cats chewed it).

I will post the information in the Numbers Game Forum where this discussion probably fits a little better..

Count me in the "like the smaller size" group. I'm down to really squeezing them into what I've been informed by my wife is my last cabinet (actually, I know we really don't have room for another one or she wouldn't care) so the small size makes this one an option for me. Saw it when we were out for the Baltimore reunion.
