A few Rhode Island Lighthouses

A few Rhode Island Lighthouses - 05/07/02 02:13 AM

Sharon had the day off today, so we decided to head for Newport for the day and celebrate our 24th anniversary.

On the way I managed a few pictures and thought I'd share them with you.

Bristol Ferry Light

I've gone over the Mt. Hope bridge dozens of times and never new that this light was under the bridge. I wasn't able to get near the light as it is private property and construction workers were working on the bridge and I couldn't get out near the water to get other pictures. Will try again when contruction is done.

Goat Island, RI

Fence and private property kept me from getting closer.

Hog Island Shoals, RI

Without a boat, this was the best I could do!

Musselbed Shoals, RI

This is what's left of the footing on which Musselbeds Shoal Light once stood. Sad that this small lighthouse completely disappeared.

Needless to say we had a great day in Newport. Wonderful weather and a great wife to share it with!

Bert

Good job on the pics, Bert! Isn't it nice having so many lighthouses within driving distance of our neck of the woods?

Did you go to Castle Hill and Beavertail too?

Thanks for sharing the pics, Bert, and Happy Anniversary to you. Looking at your first pic makes me think of how many great views of lighthouses are messed up by utility wires. Doesn't it make you wish they would be required to bury them around historical buildings? (just hoping....)

Great job Bert. Now where exactly are these lighthouses or the exact spots you located them from?

Thanks for the great comment! Photos 1,3 & 4 were all taken from under the Mt. Hope Bridge which is Route 114. Photo 1 was taken at the north end of the bridge (Old Ferry Rd)(Roger Williams College)and 3 & 4 were taken from under the south end (Old Pier Rd to Musselbed Shoal Rd.) Picture 2 was taken from near the causeway leading to Goat Island.

I agree about burying wires anywhere near historical buildings. I wanted to get out near the waters edge to get pictures as the tide was outand the wires would have been mostly out of the pictures, but a construction crew was working on the bridge abutments and I didn't want to get under them and make them nervous or better yet get thrown out of the area. They won't be working there forever and the area is not that far from home. I can always go back.

BobM. I didn't get out to Castle Hill, but we went right by the road to it. Saw Beavertail flashing in the distance from Ocean Drive. Also was able to see Sakonnet Point way off in the distance when we walked a short distance on the Cliff walk.

Still learning how to use the new camera, so I'll be out taking more pictures till I get comfortable with what I'm doing.

Bert

Well done, Terry! What program are you using to clean up your photos. Whatever it is it sure does a fine job! Thanks for cleaning up the wires!

HI ROn,

Thanks for the well wishes! I just bought an OLympus c-3020 and I'm having a ball learning how to use it. I just found out that the pictures of Hog Island Shoals and Musselbed Shoals would have been closer had I known how to turn on the Digital Zoom.

Oh well! I've always said "Live and learn!"

It seems to be a great camera with more features than I'll ever use but it had things that I wanted. The main thing being I don't need to take 24 or 26 pictures before developing the film.

I just finished commenting on the stories on the NELL site and have only read one so far, but they seem to be really informative about life in a lighthouse setting. Thanks for giving us the ehads up on these as I'm sure that others will enjoy them as much as I will.

Nice pictures (and nice editing!) I might have to go back and remove some wires from Cape Henry now. I hope to zip through RI in August- now I have a few more stops to make!
