Wash. LH License Plate?

Wash. LH License Plate? - 07/15/05 02:59 AM

I've been decorating my room with license plates from all 51 states. In my quest for plates to purchase, I came across a webpage showcasing the new 2006 Washington state special interest license plates.

I found a new plate...and went to the WA DMV page to confirm. And check this out:

http://www.admiraltyhead.wsu.edu/licenseplate/

Yay! laugh

For all our WA friends, this could be a great new decoration for your car! And if anyone needs to do something with their old plates (from Washington or any other state), let me know...I'm interested.

Nice plate. If I lived there I sure would like that one on my vehicle!

Not only will it look great on our vehicles it also raises funds that will benefit all Washington state lighthouses open to the public. A portion of the license plate proceeds will go into a grant fund set aside for restoration projects and public education efforts.

This effort was led by Friends of Admiralty Head Lighthouse along with their friends at North Head, Mukilteo, Point No Point, Dungeness, Point Robertson and Westport/Grays Harbor Lighthouses. Together they gathered over 3500 signatures from supporters which were submitted to the Special License Plate Review Board.

The lighthouse license plate is a composite image of several Washington lighthouses, based on a watercolor by Coupeville artist Janet Orso.

Greg,

I must have missed the hoopla- when did we add the 51st state and what's it called? laugh

Greg,

I was wondering about that also. What area are you including?

Washington, DC. They issue their own plates and are part of the continental US, so license plate people consider them a "state" (as opposed to the island territories). It's easier to say "51 states" instead of "50 states and DC".

Good catch. smile

Greg,

I figured that was what you meant- I just coudn't resist some good natured ribbing, though. laugh

The new license plate for WA is neat looking. One thing that does seem unfair (at least as I read it in the Admiralty Head article) is that the majority of the funds stay at Admiralty Head and only 25% go into the grant fund?

Greg,

If CONUS is the requirement, why are you including HI and AK? There are only 46 states in the US. DC is neither a state nor a territory. Since you included AK & HI & DC, why do you overlook PR and Guam?

Only 3,500 signatures to get a plate? Here in Florida we need 30,000 and we have to pay a company $4.00 a piece to get and verify them. In addition we have to put down a $60,000 deposit for a grand total of $180,000. Now as the plates sell we would get back the $60,000. When the Florida Lighthouse Association gets to the goal, all monies raise will go to the benefit of Florida's 30 Lighthouses.

Dave,

If you want to take it that far you have to exclude Virginia, Pennsylvania and Massachucetts as they are Commenwealths not states. laugh

Okay...this is getting confusing. AK and HI count by default - I already have them. I've already got a MA, so that means I have to get all the commonwealths now. Plus, I have no idea what the difference between a commonwealth and a state is. And DC is a part of the continental US geographically, has its own plate, and is a part of the country.

If I went into getting plates from all the territories, you could go crazy. All the island territories have different plates for the different islands. I'd need a whole wall for all of them. I figure "50 states + DC" is the best way to go at first.

Greg, I have some Virginia lighthouse plates no longer in use. They do show a little wear & tear from being on the car. I changed the "vanity" message, and so got new plates.

Let me know if you'd like to have them. They have "KTF" on them, standing for "Keep the Flame."

Greg,

Relax- we're just being our normal selfs- at least Dave and I are.

We're just messing with your brain a bit- it's all in fun.
laugh

In all aspects that matter a commonwealth and a state are the same thing- it's just something left over from colonial times and how they were organized.

Here's a bit of info to confuse things a bit more- the official name of Rhode Island is- The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Here's a link explaining it-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhode_Island

Seriously, though I'm not sure if it's still possible but at one time you were able to order a Virginia Lighthouse liscense plate even if you did not live in VA

Dennis,

You missed my comment about only 46 states . . . . . there are actually 4 Commonwealths.

Eric,

The state of FL has got to be really ripping off it's constituents with those fees. Maybe it has to do with the fact that FL seems to have a vanity plate for every cause down to your local fast food drive thru crew and they see the excessive fees as a way to not only profit but also to cut down on the number of plates.

Find a lighthouse friendly state legislator and see if they will introduce private legislation to specifically create a FL lighthouse plate and by-pass the normal system.

Re: Wash. LH License Plate? - 07/20/05 01:03 AM

Of course ...

... on the now defunct ABC show "Sportsnight" the color commentator at the boxing match in the episode titled "The Cutman Cometh" explained to Dan and Casey how Atlantic City was home to Miss America, currently "Miss Rochester" and how she reigns over all 52 states ...

Its a shame that show went off the air ...

Grover,

I loved that show. It was a funny intelligent look at the world of Television sports- and life in general.

They had some good people involved in that show. It's a shame it was cancelled. it's unfortunate that something of quality can't stay on and trash gets renewed.

Yes, the high requirements are to cut down on the number of plates. Some would have them cut all together. Nonetheless, it would be good income to get every year.
