Relocated lighthouses - 03/10/99 04:55 PM

Reading the updates on the Hatteras move has got me wondering. How many lighthouses have been moved from previous locations? Some back a ways due to erosion, some to museums on land that were formerly in the ocean. Does anyone have a list of these?

Mombo,

Good question. We must stipulate moved to save and not replaced, right?

Off the top of my head, here's some moved to save:

Nauset Beach MA
Chatham MA
Southeast Block Island RI
Cape Hatteras NC

Moved otherwise:

Colchester Reef VT (to Shelburne Museum)
Drum Point MD (to Museum)
Seven Foot Knoll MD (to Inner Harbor, part of museum)

Stonington Harbor in Stonington, CT

Highland (Cape Cod)
Three Sisters of Nauset (Moved and returned?)

It gets a little confusing with the Cape lights, but I think I've figured out which tower went where!

Amelia Island, FL started out on Cumberland Island, GA

Hillsboro Inlet was actually built at Chicago and made a stop at the St. Louis 1904 Exposition before arriving in Florida

Hooper Strait (screwpile) was moved ashore to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

Chicago Harbor Lighthouse was built on the end of North Pier in 1893.In 1917 it was moved to the breakwater. The buildings on either side were built after the relocatiion.

Chicago's 1859 skeletal tower light was moved to Rawley Point WI when the 1893 tower was built. (Too tall to be effective as thick smoke from steamships & industry often obscured it.)

The New Point Loma light was built at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago to show off the Lighthouse Service's innovations. The 3rd order lens that was supposed to be NPL's was put in the Chicago North Pier light.

The Little Red Lighthouse (Jeffrey's Hook) was moved to its present location from North Hook (Sandy Hook) in 1921.
