By taking that magical map of Michigan everyone has, (most everyone) look at the palm of your right hand. Where your thumb & Index finger meet is Bay City, my hometown.

I am about:

1 mile from the Saginaw River Rear Range Light

55 from Tawas Point

and just hours from many many more Michigan Majestic Lighthouses!!!

I'm about 6.5 miles from Suede's Restaurant (formerly owned by the late Carl Perkins, a Jackson native, and named of course for his hit song Blue Suede Shoes, later covered by Elvis.) This building used to be the New England Chowder House, and still has a lighthouse of sorts attached to it. It is something of a landmark for visitors and as such may qualify loosely as an aid to navigation.

I'm only about 450 miles from Biloxi and Pensacola, and a mere 550 miles from Chicago. Just a little farther away (at about 800 miles) are Bald Head and Morris Island.

Eat your hearts out.

Yerba Buena is the closest. (I haven't been able to trespass my way in yet.)

Followed by Alcatraz, Fort Point, and Point Bonita. These I have been able to legally access!

Guy about 3 miles away has one in his front yard. Craziest thing you ever seen. About 20 to 25 ft high. I'll see if I can't get over there and take a picture, maybe ask him if I can tour it. Closest water around here is Branson, about 25 miles away, the way the old buzzards fly (number 1 tour bus destination in the US). Home of Andy Williams, The Lawrence Welk Orchestra(don't laugh, their gift shop is a HL dealer) and Wayne Newton's summer home. Branson has a population of a little over 3,000 but has 6 HL dealers. Imagine that. BTW Yes I've checked, none of them have any rare pieces. Mostly new dealers.

When I am at work, I am only two blocks away from the lighthouse on top of the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. Which has been doing it's job for years. Now if you are talking about one near water it is 175.9 from my driveway to the Michigan City Lighthouse in Michigan City, IN.

Nearest lighthouse - the one at the Mesa Playland Miniature Golf Course! After that it's a long 6 hour drive thru the desert from Phoenix to San Diego. Tough to take for a Boston native!

Climb out of the hole, run through the cornfield, jump in the ol' pickem-up truck, race past the Golden Dome, head west (stopping at a few cemetery's to see some "Old Friends"), 20 minutes later finally get to Michigan City Lighthouse. Takes a lot longer to get back though, Gambling boats within sight!

Paul,

With all due respect to your sainthood, you forgot Cooper's Light in Muncie:

There really is more than corn in Indiana...
Maybe we really need to work on Indiana Beach. Maybe they could host the Hatteras Light on its journey cross country.

Well here in Orlando these would be the closest to me:
Cape Canaveral and Ponce Inlet. About 45 mins away. There's a great seafood restaraunt at the marina by Ponce, just another reason to visit.
I'm originally from Rochester NY, Home of Charlotte light.

This topic has provoked some thought for me. I live in Morgantown, WV (obviously a lighthouse-free state)and if I travel north on Interstate 79 for 2 hours and 45 mins, I arrive in Erie PA and Presque Isle State park. I have spent many summers since my childhood swimming in the lake under the shadows of the Presque Isle lighthouse. It is one of my sentimental favorites of the Harbour Lights pieces.

Currently, I'm a six hour drive from Bodie Island. I live in north central North Carolina. However, about seven hours ago I was ridding right past Bodie on the way home from Hatteras. I got some photos of Hatteras, and Bodie, and climbed Currituck, yesterday. I have to agree with Robert, I want to climb Bodie.

Orv,

Go east and pass Evanville, Indiana on I 64 and you'll see Hatteras on the north side at the Comfort Inn exit. Went theough Springfield 2 weeks ago on my way to and from Oklahoma. May be the Hatteras move gone crazy and be the same light.

Re: Which Lighthouse(s) Are you Closest To? - 04/13/99 02:28 PM

Pomham Rock in East Providence, Rhode Island is the closest LH to my home. It's about 17 miles by car and only a few hundred yards from my boat at Edgewood Yacht Club.

With the exception of outer Cape Cod, which takes me about 2 hours to reach Race Point, most every LH in Massachusetts is no more than an hour's drive. I can also reach every LH in Rhode Island in an hour or less. I can also visit many of the Connecticut LHs in under 2 hours.

I drove up to Portland Head last February in about 2 hours then gradually worked my way back along the coast. I didn't get to see the New Hampshire lights on that trip because of early darkness.

Since I'm a boat owner I have a distinct advantage when it comes to visiting LHs on the islands of Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Block Island, the eastern end of Long Island, NY, and the Connecticut shoreline. I will be in Nantucket for the last week in June this summer and hope to take many more photos from different angles while I'm there.

I would have liked to name all the lights within 2 hours of traveling time, but it would be much to lengthy to post in this thread.

I feel very fortunate to have access to so many LHs. It is a wonderful experience to return to each one for a frequent visit. I guess that's the advantage of living fairly close to the Atlantic Ocean and its adjacent waterways.

Replying to RSCROOPE (a.k.a.Wacko)

Hello there,

We are almost neighbors!

I come from East Setauket and Old Field Lighthouse is about a 15 minute drive from my home. I visit about once every 3 weeks, walk the grounds and with binoculars you can see Middlleground Light (on a real clear day you can see Eatons Neck popping out thru the trees).

I do volunteer work at the Fire Island Lighthouse about once a month doing tower tours.

Horton Point is a great place to visit and so is Montauk!!

I've been to Eatons Neck a few times. The U.S.Coast Guard personel are real nice there.
If you stop in and see the officer of the day the will let you walk around (stay on the road). The fesnel lens is a beauty!!

Last but not least, take a ride out to Orient Point. If you park in the ferry parking lot and walk to the beach you can view the "Coffee Pot" and Plum Island Light (bring binoc's).
Also, when your about 2/3 miles from Orient stop along Route 25 and the "Bug Light" is viewable.

If you get real adventurous take a ride to Sands Point for a look at Execution Rock and Sands Point Light. I've been there twice and "The Rock" is one of my favorites.

"Keep the Flame". Hope to "hear" from you soon.
