Charleston Light Ownership Transfer

The ceremony is today, Nov. 9.

That would be a moving ceremony to attend. I was able to be at the ceremony at Bodie Island when the Coast Guard turned over the light to the NPS. It was a really nice ceremony with good speeches from both the Park Service & the CG. I will admit it made me teary.

At Bodie, even though the NPS now owns the light, the Coast Guard still gives guidance and makes sure the light is set correctly since it is still an active light.

I wonder if you'll be able to go inside it. It has an elevator, and is a very unique looking tower.

The Parks has a tuff decision to make. The elevator does not go all the way to the top and it needs repair, not to mention only 2 or 3 people could fit inside. The stairs are easy to climb and end up the same place as the elevator, however, then you have to climb a straight ladder about 8 feet then another one about 16 feet to get to the top. Don't know how they will feel about the possibilities of someone falling from one of the ladders....of course I hope they do and just warn people and make they sign a waiver.

^^^

The Oak Island Lighthouse has ladders, and they have tours where people can climb it.
