Transfer of Esopus Meadows Lighthouse

As a member I received an invitation to the official transfer of the lighthouse from the Coast Guard to the "Save Esopus Lighthouse Commission" which will take place next Sunday the 22nd at 2pm. Is anyone else planning to attend?

Following the ceremony members will be able to visit and briefly tour those parts of the lighthouse that are not being worked on.

We are thinking of going down on Saturday to do Kingston-Rondout and attending the Esopus Meadows event on Sunday.

We are jealous, Sue. Last Fall on our USLHS Hudson/Long Island Cruise, we cruised around two sides of Esopus lighthouse (the two sides that were safe to cruise around) for pictures. They were working on it at the time. It is fantastic that the group is assuming control as they have done wonderful things for the restoration of the lighthouses on the Hudson...

We did get the chance to visit Kingston-Rondout after we left the Esopus-Meadows light... it has been restored very nicely. We couldn't spend much time there as we were trying to get to West Point before dark to spend the night and we were running a little behind with a couple of Coast Guard inspections of the boat (it was right after 9/11).

Have a great trip and, of course, we will be waiting on the images of the event.

I've got to think about moving somewhere closer to a bunch of lighthouses. Wonder if there is some mapping program that can find the ONE spot closest to the MOST lighthouses.

Like where would you have to live to be within 100 miles of 50 lighthouses? (If there is such a place.)

Anyway, congratulations to Mombo for being appointed "Lighthouse Ambassador from the Collector Forums" today.

When Dave gets back we'll see if he can make up an 'official looking' swash to wear to these special events, Sue.

Now you need to be sure to get YOURSELF in at least one photo at these events.

I'd say somewhere in north Jersey to Western long Island would fit the bill.

The area from Eastern Ct to Southern Maine would do also. Close to the coast of course. I'd say somewhere on the Narragannsett Bay would get you closest to the most.

You've got all the RI Lighthouses and a large portion of the Massachucetts Lighthouses within 100 miles with some CT ones thrown in for good measure along with a good number of NY Lighthouses over on LI.

BobM and I live in Massachusetts just over the line at the Northeast corner of Rhode Island. He is in NOrth Attleboro and I am in Bellingham.

A quick count of lighthouses within a hundred miles of us would include:

Connecticut at least 10
Rhode Island 34 Some gone
Massacchusetts 65 Some gone
New Hampshire 2
Maine 2 or more

That gives us at least 113 lighthouses in this area. I've yet to see them all, but sure am trying!

Come on up and look around, I think you'd like the neighborhood.

Well we won't be going to Kingston-Rondout tomorrow as their boat to the lighthouse is gone for servicing. We are now 0-2 on getting on that boat! We may drive down to the Esopus Meadows event anyway on Sunday. The weather's a bit iffy but I spoke to the director today and she said they're on rain or shine for the ceremony and the boat trips.

When I visited the Saugerties light a few years back, I wondered over to the yacht club on the river and struck up a conversation which ended up in my being able to go out to the light on a Zodiac.

No harm while you're there to ask someone if they'd run you out to look at the light.

We went. It was very nice. Story, naturally, and pictures to follow!

Thanks for this one too BJ! Saved me from looking for it. This week's pretty hectic but will try to get the photos on here before too long.

John I have also thought of trying to hitch a ride on occasion. Just haven't tried it yet. Since we had a full day yesterday we just didn't have the time to try that for the Kingston Lighthouse. Besides I'd want to be able to get inside it too and yesterday we were otherwise occupied during the hours that Kingston would have been open.
