Cape St. George, FL - 09/09/98 11:52 PM

The Tampa Tribune ran an article
in the Sun., 09/06/98 Florida Metro
section on Cape St. George Light.
The catchy headline was "By
George, it's standing !". Earl ran
right past it as hurricane winds,
80 mph, came ashore. The light
was built in 1852 and at 70 feet
tall, it now lists at 7 degrees. At
first the lighthouse was 552 yards
from the waters of the Gulf of
Mexico, now water laps at it
everyday.

A group of lighthouse lovers from
the panhandle of FL are trying to
save it. $$ has been raised and
hopes are high that some work can
begin before it topples over.

Not knowing where Sapelo Island was, I checked the mapping CD and found it to be roughly midway between Tybee Island/Savannah and St. Simons lighthouse. The Expedia provides the following info:
Quote:

Sapelo Island Tour
Landing Rd.
Meridian, Georgia 31319
912-437-3224
Fax 912-485-2141
The ferry to Sapelo Island weaves through schools of dolphins, while people on the island tour stop to examine frog fetuses and shark sacks preserved in jars of formaldehyde and wander out to the famous turkey statue. Bring food and water.

Thanks for the info on Cape St. George Light. I wondered if it made it through Earl O.K.

There are some very good pictures and a tour of St. George at www.erols.com/lthouse/csglt.htm.
Neil Hurley has pictures on this site that show how badly Cape St. George is leaning.

Further information concerning the effort to rescue Cape St. George light: the news article referred to above indicated the Save the Lighthouse Committee has raised enough money for a substantial stabilization of the light. The plan is to straighten it, drive 20-foot pilings in a 50-foot diameter around the light, and then pour concrete to support & protect the base. Let's hope it works!!
