How Many USA Lighthouses Have YOU Seen? - 12/10/03 09:29 PM

We've asked this question before. But I've posted a new checklist of the 704 existing lighthouses in the USA (+ Mispillion). This is a PDF document you can print and check off the ones you've visited, viewed or climbed.

The list includes lightships and lifeboat and lifesaving stations. If you report on how many you've seen, please use indicate the number of lighthouses, lightships and LSS or LBS separately.

www.LighthouseStickers.com/pdf/LighthouseList.pdf

If you find additions, deletions or changes, please email me and let me know: chidester@lighthousestickers.com

Turns out I've see more than I thought. I checked off 173 lighthouses and 6 lightships.

I've been to 193 Lighthouses, 2 Lighthships (3 if you count the Light Mast in the restaurant parking lot near my house) and 1 LSS.

I have not done much in the Great Lakes area so far.

Sea Girt (Greg) corrects my list to say that the Chapel Hill Front Range NJ light is the same as the Conover Beacon light so strike the "Chapel Hill Front Range NJ" light from the list. I'll make that correction in a day or two.

Now if all you people who've been to over 100 lights would just order stickers for all the ones you've been to...

Need to add Grand Marais & Minnesota Point Ruins in MN; Manhattan Front Range in OH; Chessapeake Tower in VA. Add Liberty as an alias for L/S Winter Quarter (it is painted with Liberty). Also need to make St. Joe MI a (2). Also, since you have some faux/replica lights listed, you might want to include Coopers Light in Muncie, IN.

Nice, handy list for people to use. Aren't some of the lights really modern beacons not traditional lights?

On a quick pass, I came up with 360 lights visited, 11 Lightships and 6 Life Saving Stations.

You are also missing the Frying Pan Lightower in NC, but that is scheduled to be torn down in the next year.

Here are som additional replica lights:

2 Roanoake RIver replicas-- 1 in Manteo, 1 in PLymouth, NC
Stingray Point Replica, Deltaville, VA

As in 'Texas Towers'? Or end of pier lights? Or Conover Beacon? What do you mean here, Dave?

Should I put an asterisk by 'replica lights'?

Cleft of Rock
Sea Pines (Hilton Head)

How about those Santa Cruz lights? What are they?

Re: How Many USA Lighthouses Have YOU Seen? - 12/11/03 07:32 AM

OK, I've updated the list with suggestions from this thread and several emails (thanks)

Took out the Diamond Shoal from NC (a 'texas tower') and didn't add in the other 'texas towers'. Who can see these anyway???

Added Minnesota Point, (Grand Marais was already there). Added Manhattan Front Range OH. (Anybody seen that one?)

I also single-handedly moved Conimicut from CT to RI -- didn't need Expert Housemovers help at all!

Added a few LSS/LSB from suggestions received.

Dropped the Chapel Hill Front Range NJ.

Haven't added the replicas of Roanoke River or the Stingray yet. What's the story on these?

What do YOU consider to be a 'lighthouse' worthy of a field trip and a snapshot if you're in the area? Do we include Marina replicas, pier lights (not lighthouses), etc? Or should it show up on charts as at least a 'private aid to navigation' today? But then that would exclude some of the ruins that we're including.

John,

I visited the Stingray Point and both Roanoke Marshes replicas on my trip to the Outer Banks. If you want photos let me know! The replica at Manteo was not completed at the time of my visit though.

Re: How Many USA Lighthouses Have YOU Seen? - 12/11/03 03:27 PM

I'm such a slacker. I've only seen 45 lighthouses (although I've seen all the Long Island lighthouses dozens of times) and one lightship.

That number would have been a lot less if I hadn't gone to Rhode Island and Maine earlier this year! Actually, I think I may have a few more that I saw when I was a kid, but I don't remember which ones they were.

Hopefully in 2004 I'll be able to get to see some lights other than those on LI or in LI Sound!

I've seen 388 US Lighthouses, 2 in Sweden and about 10 in Canada. I've been to 6 LS and 3 LSS. Looks like I have a ways to go!

Re: How Many USA Lighthouses Have YOU Seen? - 12/11/03 05:45 PM

On the beacons, I would consider the Michigan City Breakwater to be more of a beacon than than a light. Pier lights are lighthouses as we view them - eliminate them and you wipe out a healthy chunk of Michigan lights.

I would list the replicas and ID them as such. For example, Lazaretto Point MD is a replica of a light. The Texas towers are lighthouses - the Chesapeake Chapter includes the Chesapeake Tower as part of its 40+3 program.

I would venture a guess that most of the people on our Toledo & Lake Erie adventure this year saw both Manhattan Range Lights. I even gave them a map locating them.

John, according to your list, I have been to 119 lighthouses, 78 of which are in Michigan. smile The list of Lifeboat Stations was interesting too. I have been to or seen 6 of what you have listed so far. I have always wanted to total how many lights I've actually been to. This was fun!

John, Grand Haven is a HUGE USCG Life Saving Station and should be on your list also. smile

Re: How Many USA Lighthouses Have YOU Seen? - 01/31/04 05:20 AM

I've made a third revision to the Lighthouse List This is a PDF.

There are now 717 lighthouses on the list up from 704 on the first one, but most of these additions are technical - counting Navesink and Grand Haven -- which were already on the list -- as 2 each, for example. I did add a few I had left off like the Doubling Point Range Lights in Maine. And I deleted a few such as 'End of Road Range Lights' in MI -- which were already included as the 'Munising Range Lights'.

There are a number of lights marked PVT meaning they were privately built and are, I believe, listed on navigation charts as 'Private Aids to Navigation'.

I've also put this information into a 24 page booklet as the American Lighthouse Checklist available at www.LighthouseStickers.com

After reviewing John's list, I've seen the following:

141 lights

4 lightships

6 LSS

I can see that I still have a long ways to go. wink

John, I've seen the Chesapeake Tower, and the CCUSLHS is doing a cruise out to her in June. So, sometimes you can get to see these "texas towers".

Well, I finally printed out the list and checked off the light I have seen (I might have seen more but my memory is not all that great!) and come up with 72 lights and 1 lightship. Not too bad for a beginner, huh? I hope to see more in the future.

PS - Can one mark off the lights they have seen right on the Acrobat file? I have never been able to use Adobe Acrobat except to look at things others have done.

Re: How Many USA Lighthouses Have YOU Seen? - 01/31/04 08:24 PM

John, by your list I have been to the following

80 Lighthouses
3 Lightships
5 LSS (Mostly the ones on the Outer Banks)

Re: How Many USA Lighthouses Have YOU Seen? - 01/31/04 09:34 PM

Okay, counted them up, and I've done

76 Lighthouses
3 Lightships
1 LSS

But, will add many more this year with our travels. And, I have my stickers ready to record them, as well as the stickers for the ones I have already been to.

It is possible for the creator to set up and save an acrobat file that allows you to fill in a form and save or send it. But it's a bit tedious.

What I'd really like to do is create a way for individuals to check off on an HTML form online which ones they've been to and then be able to return and add to their list. This might also permit some sort of 'top scores' listing of who has been to the most etc.

However, that programming function is beyond my capabilities.

John -

What about Myers Point Light on Cayuga Lake, Ithaca, NY? It is a lighthouse, not an old one but a real light. It is on the database for Lighthouse Depot.

I googled that lighthouse name, Eskilady and found a page with photos by someone named Carol Innerst .

eek If I knew how to get ahold of that person, I could use that picture for a sticker.

Joyce,

Do you have a date for that cruise yet? I can probably guarantee it will be sometime between June 17 and June 27, when we're in Maine. Not that being in Maine is a bad thing, mind you, it's just that there aren't too many opportunities to get out to the Chesapeake Tower.

John,

Did you try backing all the way out to the home page of that web site and grabbing contact info from there?

Myers Point Light is the lighthouse I use for my avatar. Is that one big enough or do you want me to send you another? I would be proud to have you use one of my pictures for a sticker!!

Wait, John. Munising and End of the Road ARE different. Munising is in Munising, End of the Road in Christmas (yes, there is a town called Christmas!) Both should be included on the list. smile

Wow! Some of you have seen a lot of lighthouses...

I have seen 51 lighthouses on this list. (I have seen another 10 or so outside of the US.) I hope to add a few more during the Door County Lighthouse walk and my trip to Washington in June.

These stickers look great. Will we have a chance to see them in Door County?

On the Wisconsin list, there is Superior Harbor Entry and Wisconsin Point listed. Are these the same light?

Oh, I missed one... I didn't notice Kalaupapa the first time I looked at the list because I didn't recognize the name. I saw the Molokai lighthouse from a helicopter last March. (Hope that counts.) The picture of the sticker says Maui on it. Is that because it's in Maui county?

286 Lighthouses
3 Lightships
11 LSS

Will finally hit the 300 mark this May in Oregon & Washington.

The Hawaiian Lights name the island that they are on rather than the city that they are near.

Just got off the phone with Rod and he has a couple of great ideas which I think many of you will like. It might take a few weeks to get it going, but you will like it!

John,

So, shouldn't the Kalaupapa lighthouse sticker say Molokai instead of Maui? Or am I missing something...

I saw the stickers yesterday. AMAZING JOB!! Seeing the sheets of them are really cool...I would have loved to have won them! Buying all the individual stickers would be WAY too expensive for me, even with the Wacko discount, but I'd love to collect them. Alas, they went to another. As did the #9 Stratford Xmas and Rondout II pieces. And I didn't win ANYTHING. frown
