Amagansett Lifesaving Station to Become Museum ? - 05/19/07 01:41 PM

Joel Carmichael bought the abandoned 1902 lifesaving station in 1966 for 75 cents and moved it to his property for $10,000. After his deaf last year, the children planning to sell the property, donated it back to the town.

The East Hampton Historical Society which operates the nearby Town Marine Museum, plans to move it back to the original location on the dunes and operate it as a museum.

I'll have to check this out next month when we go sailing - my dad's friend's house is in Amagansett. May even be able to see it on the way out the harbour (Three Mile, if anyone else knows the area and where the LSS is going better).

Nice to hear good stuff like this. Also nice that the residential owner really tried to keep everything together - no incongruent additions, no major interior modifications...that'll make it a LOT easier to open it up.
