Where Do You Call Home?

What area of the country are you from or have allegiance to when it comes to the Collector's Forums? Are you from the Great Lakes, Central, Midwest, Northeast, Southeast, Gulf, Southwest or Northwest region of the USA. Are you from a border state of one of these regions? This poll will once and for all (that's debatable) settle the question of where the most Forum members are from. There will only be one question with eight possible choices. If you are not from one of the regions listed, then choose one that is closest to you or where your allegiance is.

If you want to have a reasonably accurate poll response, you need to define what is included in each area. I live in Indiana - it is on the Great Lakes, is generally considered to be in the Midwest, and could be considered a Central State. Is Florida a Southeastern State or a Gulf State? Where does the Northeast end and the Southeast begin?

Funny you mention that Dave. Maryland is the same way...Northeast? Southeast? Mid-Atlantic?

I was once on a phone menu system that had you press a number for your region. The nice thing was, they listed each state that was in each region ("For New England - including Maine, NH, VT, MA, RI & CT - press 1") It was great. Except they never mentioned Maryland at all! I went with whatever region Delaware was in. Guess what...I was wrong and got transferred!

Maybe the best format of areas would be to follow the Harbour Lights lighthouse areas that is on their brochures.
And each person pick there allegiance to the area closest to them.

North Atlantic
Great lakes region
Southern region
Western Region

Do what your concience tells you or where you feel you reside. I clasify the East coast of Florida as Southeaster and the West Coast as Gulf. Just like HL does. The poor people in the central part of the state can choose their alegiance to where they feel their roots are. If I had called Indiana a Great Lakes State surely someone would have said it was Midwest. If I had called Missouri a Gulf Stae someone would have said it was a Central State. You have to vote with your conscience and go with your true feeling for whatever locale you feel your included in.

New York is a Northeast as well as Great Lakes State. I agree with the above change the listing in the poll

I live in the Mid-Atlantic region, which, the last time I looked, was still part of the United States.

I do not live in the Southeast, nor do I live in the Northeast, but my state sure as heck, is still here.

Funny, we've just gone through this same discussion at Lighthousing.net. We got the Mid-Atlantic states back on the map there too!

Being an Upstate New Yorker I went with Great Lakes as I'm closer to them than the ocean. Downstate folks could go with Northeast. Pick the answer that is most representative of your location, I'd say.

However, we are only a very small portion of the HL collecters so I'm not sure how accurately we represent the whole. Nancy Younger once told me that the greatest number of Society members are from the Southeast. Think she mentioned what area came in 2nd but don't recall what she said.

At this point I can't even remember why we're doing this but what the heck, I voted anyway!

That's okay, Melody. I'm a southern (pronounced sou-then) girl too, and always will be, even if transplanted. Virginia is absolutely below the Mason-Dixon line.

But when defining the regions of this country, the states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Washington, DC
are typically defined as the Mid-Atlantic region.

However, to help throw off Harbour Lights statistics, I purchase most of mine in the South (North Carolina).

However, that doesn't mean I have to agree with that division

Virginia is still the South to me, least wise any place from Richmond and continuing on South.
(I'm sure there are some Virginians farther North who would take offense to that comment and consider themselves part of the South as well, and for that I most deeply apologize.)

I consider VA and down the south. To me, if it was a Confederate state during the Civil War, and was in the southeastern quarter of the US, it is a southern state. Union states are the north.

Just my theory.

Well now let's see......... from a "lighthouse" geographic standpoint in most texts on lighthouses Virginia is considered to be in the mid-atlantic. Otherwise I would say that Virginia is in the south.Perhaps you could say that Virginia is a southern mid-atlantic state.Having been born in Virginia I do have that southern accent. I grew up and went to high school in the same town that Judy lives in... Midlothian, VA.

The original eastern most survey point of the Mason Dixon line,done by the English, marked by a marker stone is at the site of a lighthouse in what could be considered a northern mid-atalntic state.The HL LE includes the marker stone. What lighthouse is it? Post your answers.

Melody you are correct. Fenwick Island , DE on the eastern shore border of Delaware and Maryland.

....that is always an interesting question. I guess you just go with the flow as to who is asking the question...

I live just about as far south in Virginia as you can get without crossing over into North Carolina. My friends, who live south of me, are always kidding me that Virginia "isn't in the south....just in the southern half of the North"!

Who's to say.......

I always thought it would be cool to climb the tower at Fenwick (you can't) if it is truly half De, half MD. I could get the thrill of (you will find this strange) going between two states as I wind up the tower. It's much like when we take the Rover up the beach at Corolla. At the northern end of Hwy 12, there is a beach access ramp. You can drive 12 miles or so up the beach to the NC/VA border. You can't drive through (it is a VA State Park...False Cape?), but there is a little roundabout thing that you can walk through to get into VA. I get a kick (you will think this is strange too) of spreading my legs on either side of the fence and being in two states at once. How often can you do THAT?

12 was actually originally supposed to go all the way through. But then with the opening of Back Bay NWR, False Cape SP, and Currituck NWR, the deal fell through. The owners of homes up there have keys to a "secret" gate which I have yet to see. Thus they can get out in an emergency (yes there are homes back there!!! A whole town!!!). If you look at a map (e.g. S+T) of the area, you can see two streets (Sandpiper and Seashell or something like that) that are both on the NC and VA sides. they are paralell in both states, and look like they would align to also connect through to make a continuous road.

Well Greg, you'd LOVE the 'Four Corners' where the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah come together. It's the only spot in the US where four states touch.

And you can put a foot in two states and hands in two states at the same time.

It's on the Navajo Reservation which straddles the borders of all four states.

EVEN BETTER!!! I knew about the Corners and monument, but didn't know you could actually BE in all four states. I thought they would have some statue or something. Pleasant surprise!

It would be cool to make a website with all the places where you can be in multiple states at once. Not on a road, but cool places...hmmm..

Come on everyone, VOTE !! . Surely out of over 1100 members we can garnish up more then 69 responces. We have over 100 members visit the Forums everyday and this should at least give us 100 votes. The Great Lakes is in the lead with 19 votes followed with a tie for 2nd place between the Northeast and Southeast with 17 votes apiece. Now is the time to show your geographical spirit.

Nothing could be easier than casting a vote at the voting booth. All you have to do is be registered at the CF and be logged on at the time you vote. Pretty simple procedure, I would say.

Then why do people who spend time here, not participate? Probably the same reason you never have 100% participation in a vote on anything. People figure their vote won't change anything or they really don't care either way.

Obviously, we have more "readers" than "posters". That's okay too. I'm just glad people come here to see what's going on in the world of HL collecting and beyond.

Bob, some of us are just readers. I tend to be more of a listener than a talker. That's probably why I'll never get to Wacko status. I enjoy the forum very much.

Hi Mrs. Sarge, ...Good to hear from you! It's okay to be more of a reader than a poster. We're just happy you take the time to visit and read what all the members have got to say.

I've never been shy about expressing my opinion or trying to stir up a little more interest in the CF. It's nice to know that people actually read what we all have to contribute. One of those "If a tree falls in a forest and there is no one around, does it make a noise" things.
