Internet Connection Speed

Internet Connection Speed - 02/02/06 11:39 PM

I'm working on my website, and I'm curious as to the demographic here (probably a good indicator of the general lighthouse community demographic) on the face of internet connection speed.

I'm trying to make it somewhat dial-up friendly - compressed and small photos, simple (though well-designed) pages, etc. But I want to see where the community is in this respect to design it accordingly.

There may be a small preview of the site in a week or so. smile

Just a note. Modem speed doen't mean much, at least in my neck of the beach. I have a 56K modem but my connect speed is only 24K on a good day. Connect speed may what you want to know about. Modems are like that.

One of the reasons I have stayed with dial-up is with my 56 K modum my dial-up speed has held steady at 50.6 K over a 6 year period. I don't do many downloads except for Norton amd MSM updates so I can live with it. I also have accelerator and all this for a whopping $14.95 a month plus unlimited minutes and free talk to a person backup service. It's not the fastest but it is the cheapest around Ocala.

I just switched to Verizon DSL because my AOL offered it. I had nothing against dial-up and was satisfied with it for a long time. When AOL offered Verizon dialup and AOL for the same price, I figured it was time to make the move.

It is a lot faster and it is nice to be able to use the phone while you're still on-line.

Re: Internet Connection Speed - 02/03/06 11:53 AM

we use DSL. We went for it, because we spend a lot of time on the net. This means the advantage that you can use the phone at the same time is important and also a dial-up would get rather expensive. We pay a flat rate for the internet.

But my main reason is the speed of the connection.

Then again... I still try - on our website - not to load too much with every page. I get frustrated, when a page takes ages to load simply because there is so much on it.

So I prefer to have several "layers" - pages with lots of links to what you realy want to see, rather than everything on one page. That is more work at the creation stages, but I think it is worth it.

I use dial-up at home and never come to the forums. I only visit the forums from work where we have a T1 line. I tried accessing the forums once over dial-up and with the many photographs, decided never to do that again.

We use DSL, but I have Net Zero on my computer as well. It comes in handy when DSL glitches like it did this morning. Doesn't happen often, but I don't have the patience Stan has to wait for the glitch to repair itself. I had no problem pulling up the CF site, even with the pictures.

I have DSL and love it. When my kids gave me my new DELL, I wanted to be able to move around quickly. Dialup was s-o-o-o-o slow and it tied up my phone line.

No problem, Tom. Someone else did, too, so I can just manipulate the numbers as such to figure out the true number for each. smile

We just switched to DSL and wireless. Three in the house using the net and a fourth wants the phone. Went with SBC/yahoo but don't use the yahoo part.
