Some more flowers

Every year I take pictures of the flowers in our garden. I use them for greeting cards, which I rarely buy, but ususally make.
My particular favourites are roses and so I thought I would bore you a little with pictures of our's

Gracious Queen was bread for the Queen's Golden Jubilee - and I wish I could transmit the smell...


Fellowship is an F1 hybrid ... not my favourite type, but this one produces beautiful flowers. Sadly no scent.


And last but not least, a very old climbing rose, who's name I don't know. This one again with a heavenly scent I can't share with you.

Beautiful roses Margret! Mine are blooming now two. Well that should be too but two roses are all I have, one yellow and one pink. Although I do have the remnants of a rose that my Grandfather planted here many years ago. It blooms later and has many small flowers that have lots of petals. When I moved here 10 years ago I was amazed to find it still here growing at the edge of the mown area of the lawn. My Grandfather passed away in 1964 and it was long before that that he planted it here at what was then a family summer cottage. It was cuttings that he had taken from one of his favorite roses at his home. He planted them in several locations. After my folks built the year round home those locations were lost. My Mom must have taken a cutting of one of those cuttings and replanted it at it's current location. Each year when that rose blooms it brings back so many great memories of my gardening ancestors!

For a long time I was afraid of growing roses, thought they were too difficult. But when I moved in here I planted three. One didn't last long but the other two are doing fine so I guess they're not that hard to grow after all!

Roses are funny things... they will grow like wildfire, where they are happy. But not every rose is happy in every location. So it is always a little like a lottery with planting a new rose.
Stan planted a container rose called Love Knot for me this morning. I am curious if it will be happy in our little sun trap next to the back door. Watch this space...

And this lovely slightly scented rose grew from a cutting Stan had from his mother. This rose rambles all over our garage


And this one, very similar, but very scented, will flower wildly in a few days and we will be smelling the sweet scent all over the garden!

Beautiful pictures-beautiful roses Margaret! Roses are my favorite flowers. I have 3 that are similiar to your Love Knot...they are just starting to bud out. You're absolutely right about them having to like where they live...I keep trying different locations to find room for MORE!

Your roses are gorgeous, Margret! Your garden must be so fragrant and beautiful. Is the climbing rose an antique one?

Sue, I enjoyed the story about your grandfather's roses and how your home evolved from a summer cottage to a year round home. Both of you have inspired me. I haven't had roses in my yard in many years. Maybe I should try my hand at them again. I loved cutting some of the blooms and making floral arrangements.

May as well throw in some peonies too!

Wow! Peonies are one of my all time favorites! Of course, we can't grow them here. Your pictures are beautiful - love the drops on the yellow rose but the second picture is exquisite!

Today was Peony Fest at our local history museum which is housed in a one room school house. The peony beds on the grounds feature many plants that were formerly grown and sold at a local flower farm. At one time that flower farm was known nationally as a leading producer of peonies as well as other types of flowers and bulbs. This farm, along with another in the area that was known mostly for it's asters closed in 1934 due to the depression. At their peak these farms cultivated over 400 acres and employed over 200 people.

I asked Doris, the on-site peony expert, about my plant that I posted photos of here previously. There was one in the museum garden. She told me its name, which I promptly forgot, but she said it's a common white variety and is over 150 years old! I told her that the blooms were so large, much larger than any I saw today. She said that I must be doing something right to have such large blossoms. I admitted that I hadn't done anything. Sometimes you just get lucky I guess!

Those Peonies are lovely! And sometimes plants thrive on "doing nothing"! I think maybe we fuss too much about them at times and they would be much better off being left to their own devices

Beautiful Peonies! I had forgotten how pretty they were. I don't think I have seen any since I was a child. My Mother used to grow peonies.

Sue, thanks for the wonderful "flower show". The peonies are all so beautiful, but your white ones are particularly so.
