Trying the new zooms...

Trying the new zooms... - 02/23/05 01:54 PM

I couldn't resist taking a picture of this sign for obvious reasons.

Conimicut Light picture taken from the west side of the mouth of the Providence River.

Timing is everything. This ship just happend by as I pulled up next to the beach at Conimicut Light.

This long distance shot of Nayatt was taken from almost a mile away (rough estimate).

This pic was taken almost directly into the sun. I guess you can't have those wonderful blue skies all the time.

I was thinking of the thread that asked for photos of your vehicle by a lighthouse when I took it. This is what I drive when the Vette is resting safely at home.

I'm still learning to use my new Olympus Evolt E-300 (8 megapixel). Currently I have two zooms that cover me from 28-300mm in 35mm terms. I can't wait for some really nice weather to come along.

Nice pics Bob. smile It doesn't look too snowy. Has it warmed up a bit?

Hi Lorie, ...We had a good melt but now we are expecting around 5-7" of snow tonight. They are also predicting another storm next Monday or Tuesday. The temps are still down so we may see the snow hang around for a week or so.

Bob! Love those pix, especially the freighter shot! Reminds me of the ones I have of White Shoal and Gray's Reef in the Mackinaw Straits with a freighter cruising in front of them. Sounds like your new camera is serving you well! I look forward to seeing more!

Looks like you're enjoying your new camera. I, too, love the freighter photo! We hardly had any snow until February. Looking forward to your next outing...

Great pictures Bob! Your camera seems to be doing very well. I hope to get out and get some pictures soon and keep learning what there is to know about the new camera. Thanks for sharing.

Bob,

I see you've been driving around the state lately. Nice pix. The fourth shot is --I think--of the faux lighthouse that someone built a number of years ago. Word is he put a blinking light in it and the Coast Guard made him take it out. I think the house is in Tiverton--is this the same house?

David-

You're thinking of a different structure. That's a 110% bona fide lighthouse in that there pitcher. It was replaced by Conimicut (which I always get confused with Conanicut...and yet can't pronounce either one), and was for a time used as its keepers house, with the keeper rowing out to the lighthouse.

Between all the rowing and lugging they did, no wonder the lighthouse keeper was the fittist guy in town. eek

Dave, ...That's the real thing, Nayatt Point at the east side of the mouth of the Providence River. I took the pic from the park at the west side of the mouth of the Providence River. I tried to drive to Nayatt Point but there was no public access that I could find that would have allowed a pic of the place.

OK, now you've discovered my naivete. Being a life long Rhose Islander I thought I was pretty much aware of all our lighthouses, but apparantly not. I'm now enlightened. There is, however, a faux lighthouse in Tiverton--maybe Little Compton-- which a homeowner built and lit a number of years ago that was shut down by the Coast Guard since it wasn't an aid to navigation but could have confused mariners. I saw it this past summer boating down the Sakkonet River and was surprised to see it. Now I'll have to investigate Nayatt more, but it's on the other side of the bay and only weird people live there.

Hi Dave, ...I know the light you are refering to along the east bank of the Sakonnet River. It's just south of Fogland. I must admit they did a great job when they built it. I often pass it when I'm heading for Cuttyhunk and Menemsha.
