Nauset Beach Light & 3Sisters - 11/15/05 06:11 PM

Nauset Beach Light
New paint job and cedar shakes (since my last visit) on this famous beauty. It's nice to see a Light being kept up this well!
There was a house for sale around the corner, next to Three Sisters, and two houses for summer rental!
I'll keep you posted, I just love this place!

That is one great picture of Nauset Light. The Cape is one great place isn't it? I just love to get out there. Thanks for sharing that one Bob.

Lovely shot, Bob. Do you have a picture of the Three Sisters? I would love to see a picture of them. One day, I'm going to make it up to that part of the country.

Great pictures Bob. Please excuse the ignorance, but I take it the Three Sisters are not active lights any longer, are they? They seem to be a bit too surrounded by trees to be useful

Re: Nauset Beach Light & 3Sisters - 11/16/05 05:05 PM

You right Margret, they're not active. They are in a little park that is a short walk from Nauset Light.

Here's some history:

Besides having the lighthouse at that location, there is a fabulous beach right across the street. That would be a great location to rent a place for vacation. You could get up early for the sunrise and close enough to stop by for the sunset.

There are numerous great lights in that area of the Cape. Do it, Bob! We'll come visit you!

Re: Nauset Beach Light & 3Sisters - 11/17/05 12:36 AM

Bob, thank you so much for posting the Three Sisters. I wonder if there are plans to restore the tops on the other two. Margret, I can't find it now but I posted some info. in another thread - a background story on the three sisters for whom they think the lights are named. I believe I found the article in the index for Lighthouse Digest.

Re: Nauset Beach Light & 3Sisters - 11/17/05 05:16 AM

Bob's post made me do a little digging in an old album ... Here's a picture of "one" sister from September 1982 ...

To get your bearings ...
... picture getting out of your car in the paved parking lot and looking at the lighthouse ... the three sisters are to your left, a few hundred yards from the lot, behind some trees in a grassy clearing ... and yes, there are three.
... then, in 1982, the lighthouse was a few hundred yards nearer to the cliff and a little closer to the lot. I don't believe it was paved at that time. The "sister" would have been directly behind you, at the far end of what is the parking lot today ... sitting alone by itself in the condition you see ... well on the west side of the road you enter the area on ...

Very interesting picture, Barry. Thanks for sharing! You either have a darn good memory or some good notes to be able to "locate" the light as you have.

Re: Nauset Beach Light & 3Sisters - 11/17/05 05:26 AM

Thanks for sharing that picture. The NPS has done a nice job of restoring the three from the looks of your picture and Bob's later pictures. When I read the story of the three women who were sisters and for whom the lights may have been named, it sparked an interest and so I bought the HL version at a recent dealer closing.

Nice pictures Bob! I haven't been on the cape since the Providence, RI reunion. It would be fun to go back. Let me know when you get your house there for your friends to stay and visit you. laugh

Thank you for the link Margret. A very interesting story even thought I had never heard about any connection to three girls.

Not intending to sound like an Old Codger....Back in '96, when I first looked at the Harbour Light LE Nauset Beach, it didn't immediately grab me. I eventually bought it, anyway, just for the sake of a complete collection, and it became one of my favorite pieces. That was relatively early in the HL production, when the telling little details---such as a door ajar, as in Nauset---really caught my attention. I even liked the GLOW version, with the autumn coloring. It's gratifying to see the photo [above] which includes the keepers' dwelling. So many photos focus only on the tower.

Thanks, Margret, I posted that link in another thread not ten days ago and couldn't find it, although my feeble memory recalled that I found it in the Lighthouse Digest website. At the time, Danny had mentioned that he does genealogy research, so I thought it might be of interest.

Barry, that "old" photo of yours - is that from when the lighthouse was one that was a privately owned summer place?

Re: Nauset Beach Light & 3Sisters - 11/19/05 04:09 AM

Sue,

I really don't know the answer ... but in the article Bob linked to his original post, it mentions that the NPS took possession of that tower in 1975 ... they had previously aquired the other two ... and it was a year after my picture was taken ... in 1983 ... that the towers were all moved to their present location and the restoration began ...

Re: Nauset Beach Light & 3Sisters - 11/19/05 04:50 AM

That's correct, Barry. When I first found the Lighthouse Digest article by Don Sparrow, it referred to the fact that the NPS purchased the buildings in 1975. I believe restoration was completed in 1989.

I'm glad you posted that link; frankly, even if you had posted before, some of us might have missed it. I love Wysocki's work - first became familiar with it through the puzzles! He's done some beautiful paintings.
