Bert...

You sure that's not my picture? I took one that's 100% identical to that. At the end of my 2004 trip thread:

http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/cgi-bin/forumscgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=15;t=000891#000000

Not mad, but how'd you get it?

In other news, here's one from my Rosh Hashana Jersey Shore trip...more on that to come.

Re: Pictures...add one of yours! - 09/30/07 01:40 AM

Must be yours. There can't be two pictures that identical unless I was standing next to you when you took it, and I can assure you that I wasn't. I sometimes put pictures in my computer that I like. This must have been the case. SORRY! I can't take the credit for someone elses picture.

Re: Pictures...add one of yours! - 09/30/07 02:38 PM

One of our "keen-eyed" participants (EOM) noticed a picture that looked pixelated among my postings. Explanation if you noticed the same thing: These are older photos of mine that were taken mostly with a 4.0 mega pixel camera, then cropped, then reduced to the size needed for posting here at the CF.

Like many of you, I enjoy looking at photos of things I've never seen in person, or different perspectives of things I have.

The above photo of the lightship Nantucket was actually taken in 2002, in Wareham, Mass.

Let's see somemore photos, please!

Joe,

Go to the December meeting of the NJLHS on 12-8-07 in audobon Park, NJ. We'll be taking a bus trip over to the Turtle rock LH. I may be mistaken but I understand we will get into it as well. It's listed as taking tours on the NJLHS website so i believe we'll get into at least part of it.

Posting pictures really not difficult. Looked at making your link into a displayed image, but where you store your photos uses characters that are not allowed in making image posts. Here is where to start . There have been discussions on several occassions about posting that are helpful to read. I believe you will find some in the Test Pad forum.

Yep. And The Lone Ranger and Captain Video and the Video Rangers and Buffalo Bob and Howdy Doody and newsreels before the movie, but I digress. Told the pilot that if we were going down, at least I died doing something I love (and I'm afraid of heights!!).

Bob,

Stan used a Sony Cybershot with 15x zoom to shoot the picture and I enlarged it to show a better cropped shot before posting it here. He does not use an additional lens. The pilot obtained clearance to fly at 1,000 feet and I'm uncertain if he would have flown any lower.

Re: Pictures...add one of yours! - 12/05/07 04:16 AM

Yes, we chatted today and she let me know. Thanks for visiting, as well as the kind words. We have and continue to work very, very hard on making the site fun and educational, as well as giving our most loyal customers a good bang-for-the-buck, so to speak. The Lighthouse Club has been phenominal. It was an idea which came to me out of the blue, and we put it on line in April of '06. Membership has been growing steadily, and we really anticipate adding many more members now that HL is part of the site.
As for the Guess-the-Lighthouse contest, I was on a US Parks Dept. site, I think, which had a similar theme. Though no prizes were awarded, it was meant to be a fun and educational way to learn about the country's lighthouses. I "borrowed" their idea, and posted the first photo on the site in July of this year. People have been a little shy at first, just like anything that is new, but we have developed a "hard core" following of a number of the same people entering the contest each month. We also get others who have placed a guess on only one or two occasions, "casual" lighthouse fans, if you will, who may recognize a lighthouse now and then. As with the Lighthouse Club, we are anticipating a much higher "hit" ratio as more people find us and tell their friends about us.
I apologize if this seems as a blatant promotion of the website. Yes, I'm very proud of what we have created there, but that's not why I'm here, so please forgive me if it does seem pretentious. As I stated in one of the very first posts I made in the welcome section, we have just recently become a Harbour Lights retailer and I'm here to learn from people like you about the company and the products. In just a short time here, I've met some absolutely wonderful people and have learned a great deal just by reading the posts. I tip my hat to all of you, truely, thank you. cheers

Re: Pictures...add one of yours! - 12/07/07 05:57 AM

Here's a link to another one on my blog.
http://letstalklighthouses.blogspot.com/2007/10/requiem-for-lightship.html
This is Lightship #114, last known as the New Bedford Lighthtship. It was the first lightship to ever make a west coast to east coast trip, (via the Panama Canal, in 1930).
114 served the shoals off Fire Island from 1930-1942. She was removed to serve as an "examination" vessel for the remaining days of WWII. At the conclusion of WWII, 114 was assigned for two years to Diamond Shoal, NC, just off the Outer Banks near Cape Hatteras. In 1947, 114 was removed from Diamond Shoals and for the next 11 years, became a "relief vessel" throughout the northeast U. S.
In 1958, 114 was again given permanent assignment, this time at Pollack Rip, a very dangerous "ship-eating" area just off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. After 11 years of serving Pollack Rip well, the lightship was again reassigned, this time to aid in the marking of Portland, Maine harbor.
After 41 years of dedicated service, Lightship 114 was decommissioned by the Coast Guard in 1971 with the intention of turning it into a "floating" Coast Guard maritime museum. Plans for the museum fell through, however, and in 1975, ownership of LV114 was transferred to the City of New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Originally, the lightship was going to be turned into a tourist attraction. That plan never materialized, and the ship sat for more than 30 years.
On May 31, 2006, the lightship rolled over on its side due to water which leaked in during a violent thunderstorm because of an open portal. In July of that year, while the City was still struggling with what to do with the lightship, and still on its side, vandals removed 23 historic brass portholes from the exposed side.
The lightship was finally righted in September of that year, and the city tried to vest themselves of it by putting it on EBAY, of all places. They pulled it after getting only 1 offer, and tried to sell it themselves. Eventually, they sold it to a local scrap dealer who dismantled it earlier this year.
The story, in its' entirety, is on the blog link.

It was a snowy/rainy day, so over the hour or two I'd been inside the lighthouse, there'd been a good coat of rain droplets on the windscreen of my truck. As I'd started the car and flicked on the headlights, I saw this shot the lighthouse behind the glass and the lights of the Rover's dash.

I wish it was a bit more in focus, especially around the gauges, but overall I really like it, and it's great for the "Sea Girt Retrospective" I'm putting together on my website.

Wow, Sandy....that last one's great. I've never been to Monhegan, but I always thought it was kind of alone on its part of the island. With this perspective, it reminds me more of something like...maybe Nobska? Surrounded by houses.

Here's another one for all, from my trip last month to Cape Florida Light. I call this one "El Faro En Espanol" because of the sign in front. I really like it because I feel like it really explains the flavour of Miami...a bilingual city. (Where everyone also ACTUALLY speaks English!)

More images from that trip are available at http://gregfitzgerald.net/travel/nov07_miami.html.

So there really isn't a roller coaster directly behind the lighthouse. I'm referring to the new 2008 Cedar Point with the roller coaster next to the lighthouse. I haven't been to Cedar Point myself yet.....

Well, how about a light ship? We went to see this one in the docks at Sharpness near Gloucester today.

and if you want to find out more about this unusual light vessel, have a look at Iris' pages: Humber Conservancy Board LV14
