Bolivar Lighthouse

Bolivar Lighthouse - 05/15/08 01:17 AM

It took me a while, but as promised, here are some more of our pictures. This one is of the Bolivar Lighthouse, near Galveston, Texas. This lighthouse is privately owned and, to be honest, rusting pretty badly.

A general shot of the lighthouse:

A nice sunburst shot my wife captured:

A view from the road going past the lighthouse:

A view from the back of the lighthouse:

Nothing real special about this one except I love the cows:

Sunrise at Bolivar:

An upclose look at the rusting top. Notice the chunk out of the ledge around the lantern room. That happened within the last year, as we have photos from a few years ago and the damage was not there. It might have occurred during Tropical Storm Humberto, which hit Bolivar head on last summer, but I don't know for sure. Since we haven't been back since this picture was taken, I'm not sure if it's been repaired or not:

And finally, one of my wife's sepia creations:

Hopefully posting this many photos hasn't bored everybody, but I wanted to provide plenty of different views.

Not boring at all, Bill. Quite nice to see images of lights that are not visited too often by members. There are several really nice images in there. I think my favorites are the sunburst, the sunrise and the sepia.

For a private owner to maintain a tower, especially a metal one, would be a real costly challenge.

I agree Dave. I couldn't imagine the expense of maintaining it. My wife and I have always hoped the light would be turned over to a state or government organization which could restore it and eventually even open it up for tours. However, if my memory serves me correct, the light has been in a particular family for a while and has been passed down, so I doubt this would happen anytime in the near future.

I will say that the owners seemed nice enough the times we've come across them. They've never had a problem with photographers.

Oh yes, and a bit of history I forgot to mention in the original posting. Many have already heard this, but it is said that close to a hundred people were saved by taking refuge inside the lighthouse during the devastating 1900 Galveston hurricane.

I agree, not boring at all. I enjoy viewing different angles of the same light. The sepia is especially nice. Reminds me of old postcards.

Thanks for sharing Bill!

NO, definitely not boring!!!
Bolivar is one of the few US lights we have actually seen and I love keeping up with it.
And these pictures are great! Thanks for a trip down memory lane !

Here's another view. This one from the deck of a cruise ship heading out from the port of Galveston.

Great photo's Bill !!! Definately not boring.

My favorate is the sunrise one.

Sad to see the damage from Tropical Storm Humberto. Hopefully it will be repaired, and the cost isn't too much.
