Mobile Point & Sand Island Lights, Alabama - 04/02/08 01:00 AM
I’ve been corresponding with J. Scott Howell, VP/General Manager of Robinson Iron Corporation, regarding Mobile Point, AL light. Information gleaned from lighthousefriends.com site indicated that the 1963 tower was removed from Fort Morgan in 2003 for restoration by Robinson Iron Corporation. Initially, I obtained permission to contact Robinson Iron from Blanton Blankenship, Site Manager of Fort Morgan, a National Historic Landmark. He indicated the Historical Commission would not have any objections if Robinson Iron did not object to Stan and me taking pictures of Mobile Point in its current condition.
I was delighted to receive an email from Mr. Howell today. He wants to know when we'll be there and welcomes the chance to show us the dismantled lighthouse. He attached pictures of both Mobile Point and Sand Island. Mobile Point’s pictures were taken in September of 2007, Sand Island’s were taken in November of 2007. Two of the three Alabama lighthouses are endangered. Hopefully, the Alabama Lighthouse Association, whose mission is the historic preservation of lighthouses, will find ways to fund the restoration needed to save them.
The last three pictures are of Sand Island, AL.
