Your Photo Assignment of the Week - 03/17/02 07:49 AM

This week's assignment: "Animals"

OK CF photographers. Here's the assignment for the week of March 17-23. Take a photograph of an animal (or group of them). It can be your cat or dog or aquarium or wild birds, bunnies; anything but a person. (Well, OK, a person with an animal.)

Submit your best single photo to me electronically. I'll post a thumbnail of each and we'll ask people to vote on their favorite (somehow).

Remember, the photo has to be taken during the week of March 17-23. Must be submitted electronically on or before March 24 to webmaster@lighthousekeepers.com .

Submit your images at 72-100 dpi with the longest dimension 500 pixels.

You've got to be a registered Collector Forum member to participate. By participating, you agree to permit the photograph to be displayed on the Internet, but with a copyright credit to you.

Next week's assignment: "Signs of Spring" But those pictures must be taken March 24-30.

You might want to give people more than a week, John... like maybe a month? That way you're likely to get more submissions. A week is a pretty narrow time frame. Just a thought...

You have a trip to the Zoo planned, John?

Nope. Just our family cat and a few bunnies living in our backyard.

I agee, doing this weekly will burn out the idea pretty quick I think.

I had to take a day off from the forums yesterday. By the time you read all the stuff and play all the games it gets pretty time consuming. While this is still my favorite place to recreate, sometimes other items scream for some attention.

You're right, Mombo...like going to your regular work job, buying groceries, doing income taxes, celebrating birthdays, working out at the gym in order to try and continue to stay healthy, etc....

Another point, John, is that a week works great for those of you who have digitals, but for those of us who use cameras with print film or slide film, it means taking either the rest of a roll or an entire roll. With a roll of slides, that means 37 pictures, which 9 times out of 10, a person is not going to take an entire roll of photos at once unless it's something he or she finds really interesting like sunrise or sunset lighthouse photos, or reflective building photos of an extremely reflective building because of the uniqueness of it, like the Standard Federal Bank Building in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan with its inwardly curved glass-windowed front, for example. Using photos of the 1 set subject, animals in this case, having just learned of the topic, I would have to find an animal some time on Monday to take photos of and take the remainder of a roll of slide film - about 18 left in one of the cameras. It would mean taking 18 photos of this animal with Fuji Velvia in order to finish the roll. The neighbor across the street does have 2 cats and a dog, but it would have to mean that 1 of them would be out and about on Mon. in order to take these photos. Since I'm off Mon., taking the roll in to be processed to the Boston Pro Lab where I take them would mean Tues. at lunch time because they wouldn't be open when I would first get in to Boston. The earliest I could then pick up the processed slides would be Wed. at lunch time. Scanning of the slides would have to be done either Wed. night or Thurs. night, etc., then resizing, sending to you as soon as possible after that before the deadline. It could be done but presupposes that an animal would be found right away to take such photos, that I wouldn't mind maybe wasting that many photos on one thing, that my work schedule at our busiest time of the year would allow being able to take these photos right away, etc., etc. Am I making my point, John, about a week being too narrow a time frame?

Hey guys, don't take this so seriously....

John was just trying to have a fun contest. If you don't have the time or a digitial camera... don't enter this contest...
remember this is all just for fun.

Now if I could just get Derek and Porsche (our two 11-year-old shepherds to just sit for a photo).....maybe I should just take a picture of Buford (our 22+ year old Tarantula) -- he hardly moves!

Re: Your Photo Assignment of the Week - 03/18/02 07:11 PM

Thanks for the suggestions and concerns.

I envisioned that this would be something those with digital cameras could participate in and with the plethora of 1 hour photo places others could if they wanted to.

This isn't anything with the prestige of the Collector Forums Photography Contest, just a friendly participation thing where fellow Forumites can choose the 'winners'. I asked that those who want to participate actually take their photos during the same time period so that we were all competing on the same ground and those who have vast libraries of photos wouldn't have an advantage.

Don't go out and buy a digital camera just to participate and don't shoot up a roll of 36 and have them printed just to participate.

Participate if and when you can, don't when you're otherwise busy.

Assignment for the Week of March 31-April 6: A civic building in your town. City Hall, Court House, Police Station, Library, etc.

Assignment for the Week of April 7-13: Something ugly in your hometown. Junk piled in the alley, graffiti, billboards, whatever turns you off: Just 'shoot' it.

Re: Your Photo Assignment of the Week - 03/21/02 03:21 AM

Hi John, ...I just sent a picture of my Jack Russell Terrier to you. I took it late this afternoon in the hallway of my home. It's nothing special but Chipper does have his serious look going because I was holding a ball in one hand and my digital camera in the other.

This challenge of a weekly photo should be fun!

Re: Your Photo Assignment of the Week - 03/21/02 04:02 AM

Came up with this change in procedures while driving around this afternoon:

I'll announce assignments about 4 weeks ahead - that is there will be 4 assignments pending. Photos can be taken anytime after the assignment has been announced.

So far 6 examples for the animal photography kick-off.

Sounds like this will give more people an opportunity to participate, John, which should mean you'll get a larger response to them.
