Avery Point - 05/01/06 10:59 PM

April 9th, NELL had its Board of Directors meeting and after we were fortunate enough to be able to climb the all new Avery Point Lighthouse thanks to NELL member and Co-founder of APLS Jim Streeter. Following are some pictures I took of that special day at Avery Point.
A stately building on the campus of U Conn @Avery Point.

The new and beautiful Avery Point Lighthouse.

Reflections.

This is the correct picture. The other was a duplicate. Sorry about that folks.

Ladder to 1st floor.

Shirin, up or down please.

To Lantern Room.

Eric, I just got a response to your question and to the best of Jim Streeter's knowledge it never had stairs. Only a wooden ladder which was up against the wall. Also, outside portions (approximately 1/2 block deep) of each of the blocks were resurfaced with new six inch blocks, the spindles were repaired and polished and a new lantern room was totally replaced by the reproduction of same- and of course the brick walkway is new. I hope this answers your question and thanks for asking. When we were there Jim and Ron Foster were saying how they would like to improve the access to the lantern room possibly by the placement of grab bar[s].

Tom,
Do you know if we will be able to go in it (climb it) on October 15th at the relighting?

Hilari, I emailed Jim and here's his response:

Tom:

I will bring it up at our next meeting. If we decide to do it during the day we will have to coordinate it with the university and also have two or three people coordinating and standing watch (entrance, second level and top floor - if we don't have the light in by then). Possible NELL people can do this?

Will let you know

Jim

As soon as I hear I'll pass it on.
