Inkjet Photo Printers - 11/24/02 08:35 PM

Any of you digerati printing your own photos? I'm thinking of getting (well... asking for Christmas) an inkjet printer.

Don't wanna jump right in to the expense of an Epson 2200, maybe something for a little less money.

Any suggestions or experiences to share? TIA.

I'm real happy with my Epson 785EPX. Prints up to 8.5x11 bleeds. Color and resolution quality of the prints is outstanding. Take a CF card with some images to your local dealer and have them demonstrate it for you on your own images.

You can also print 'index prints' (kind of like what some photo processors now provide - thumbnails)

Roll paper adapter for 4x6" prints. (Or set your own dimensions such as 4x12" panoramic prints.)

PCMCIA adapter for CF included (or exchange the CF adapter for one of the other kinds of data cards by mail.) You can print directly from the cards. You can puchase a very small monitor for the printer to view the images (not needed).

2880x720 resolution.

6 color printing (5 colors in one cartridge, black in another). Reasonable price cartridges.

USB connection for printing from the PC. (Cable not included.)

$149

Thanks for the hint, I have been thinking about upgrading my printer, and I just may pick one of these up. I checked around and I saw them as cheap as $99 online.

My research had me looking at the Epson 960 and the Canon S900. Both do 4x6 and 8x10 and use 6 individual color cartridges. Now I'm leaning toward waiting til Spring for the newer models, the Canon 950i and the Epson 970.

Tim, take a good look at the Epson 1270 or 1280. I have been using the 1270 for over two years and I have been more than satisfied. The 1270's should be at bargain prices by now. The only reason I would move from the 1270 to the 2200 would be for the individual inks and the two tones of black. I have thought about going to the Cone System and converting my 1270 to a Quadtone Printer for black and white photography only. If I do, my next printer will be a 2200.

I'm extremely happy with my HP 940C. It makes fantastic color prints and is now reasonable. I paid $200 for it last November and HP now is discontinuing it and Office Depot and Staples had it for $40.00 over Thanksgiving. Bought an extra one for that price to have as a backup. They may still have a few left.

Tim, I am also real happy with the Epson 1280. It currently has a $100.00 rebate bring the price down to $399.00. It does big prints, (up to 13" by 44"), has the roll paper attachment included, and prints super prints on Epson photo paper. They also supply a wide variety of other papers...Jim

I'm using an HP Deskjet 5550 for both text and pictures and enjoy it very much. It seems to do the job well without maxing out on the expense end.

Thought I'd pull this topic back up- I finally got a scanner and printer -the epson 2450, and after much research, a Canon i950- a great combo if you don't need anything larger than letter size. It goes full borderless, and the results are GREAT!! My prints are as good as some of the lab stuff, some are better. I couldn't be more pleased. The printer was $ 222.00 at Amazon, free shipping, no tax! I think it's a great buy smile

We've had a string of Epson prints. At the moment, I'm using both a 1270 and a 2200. Both are great and one is a little better for some things than the other and vice versa. Initially, I had intended to sell the 1270, but after having them both connected to my computer... not too likely at this point.

The single color ink tank for the 1270 is a bit of a pain since I always go through blue ink it seems a lot faster than anything else. That's one advantage of the individual color tank printers out there that is worth thinking about if you print a lot of images that use predominantly one color or another. The other thing is that the 2200 uses archival pigment inks rather than dye-based ink that the 1270 uses. This makes the former an archival printer. That said, there are some papers out there that are only compatible with one or the other of the two printers and some that will work on either.
